Does anyone know of a good source to get pre-made panels/plates for boxing in a '66 CJ5. I am planning on boxing in the whole frame this winter and would like to start getting all the steel rounded up. I have found some for intermediate jeeps but none for earlier.

Ben I don't think the frames are all that much different between the early CJ5s and the 72-75 intermediates... except that the intermediates are 3 inches or so longer in the front portion.

I don't know for sure... but I'm guessing if you have a way to trim some length, they should work otherwise...

You should of course measure your frame and get measurements of the intermediate plates you sourced...

    HTH, good luck!!

    Keep us posted... :tea:

There's been a lot of discussion about pros and cons of boxing here previously.

If you really think you need to reinforce the frame, one option is to strap the top and bottom rails. You can use standard material without having to cut pieces to shape.

Just to stir the pot a little, why do you want to box the frame? Boxing will trap water and salt and rot out (as is evident in '76-on year CJs). Stiffening the frame is not a good thing in all cases.

Here's an idea - consider reinforcing at high stress points only. See pics of my Renegade II frame, which I believe to be the factory HD design. It has a fully boxed frame from the rear hangers on the front springs all the way forward to the front bumper, which include the engine mounts and front bump stops (first 2 pics). Many CJ5s are boxed just like this one. It's also boxed at each rear spring hanger and has a reinforcement at the rear bump stop (last 2 pics). This design minimizes the flexure (or fatigue) at the open section of the "C" channel, where cracks usually start.

Was wondering if that 3'd pic. is a factory brace for rear hanger? Can anyone conferm? I didn't think they had one there, tell I saw one on a 70 frame I just got. have the same two holes like yours. the other 7o frame as well as most of the others I've seen don't have that brace.

I've really gone back and forth a bunch for my cj6 on boxing and decied not to box the whole thing, and possably not at all, but Was thinking of adding those for the rear hanger now that I've seen them a few times. I don't want to add diff, stress points then factory, but if those where an option then I might go for them. My cj6 frame flexes a ton!

Do you mean the one like this that's on my '70:

I think it was part of the heavy duty frame option that I've seen mentioned. I think it was also part of the Rengade package.

    :iagree:
thats exactly what i did. put a reinforcement above each spring hanger. the frame is supposed to flex a little and it cant if the hole thing is boxed. so i've been told.

I am not totally convinced I have to box the whole thing either. I am planning on restoring the Jeep to as close as original as possible, but the C-channel is bent up a little above rear spring hangers and cracks have been welded above almost every other spring hanger on the jeep. Once restored, I am not planning on taking this one off road. I just want to make it as safe as possible while still trying make it look good. Thanks for the responses. I will take pics Wednesday when I get back into town and post to see what everyone thinks. Thanks, BenF

My M38A1 frame is also boxed from the front bumper to back behind the front springs.
It also has the plate boxing in over the front rear spring mount.
The rear cross member mounting plate and diff covers are much thicker as well.
