Postal Jeep Crossover part

On the earlier postal JEEPS, the ones JEEP badged, not AM General, and equipped with the AMC straight six, the heater box is the same as an ECJ5. Also, the air duct hose, is the same too. I just scored a great one from Pull-A-Part for cheap, also two Sparton turn signal controllers, and a radiator fan cowling.

 

yeah, now I need to see if I can figure out how to make it actuate my brake drum, ala M38A1.....

 

Thanks, Lynn. I have the 11 inchers ready to go in and I just found a junkyard last weekend with about 10 or 12 postal jeeps in it. I was wondering at the time whether there were any parts that would fit my CJ.

The steering column is a popular swap.

Also, if any have the 153cid Chevy 4 cylinder, that's a desirable engine - essentially 2/3 of a 230cid Chevy 6 from that era (the 192/230/250 engine). This engine was very popular with midget racers, and was available in 3.0L form as an industrial engine up until the last year or two. IIRC the postals from the late 60s until AMC took over had the 153. They'll have the flat grille, not the bubble grille like the 232 equipped models.

Fenders are the same - folks are always looking for good OEM fenders.

Hmm ... no personal experience, but I think they are used with the Saginaw steering. The column is very similar (the same as?) the column used in the intermediates, with the molded bus wheel, larger diameter tube (I think) and easy connection to the Saginaw box. The mounting at the floor end may be different too. Somebody who's done the swap will have to add more details.

 

The postal columns is the same diameter as the original and will bolt up to the dash the same. It uses the same bus wheel. It is a great set up when going to saginaw as it has the heavy forged universal joint and still is able to use the factory cj turn signal switch. It has a rag joint on the bottom and because of the design is to long for a standard saginaw setup so it leaves a little to cut off and fit to the cj frame when doing the swap. You have to make a clamp for the column to mount to the floor but thats no big deal.

Does anyone know the range of years for the postal jeep that had this steering column?
