While I had my '56 speedo apart to restore my helper decided to "help". He decided to turn the speedo by the pointer....AND BROKE IT OFF!!! AAAUUUUGGGGGGG!!!

I was out putting on the final coat of paint on the case, came in and found it. AAAUUUGGGG!!

So does anyone have any idea of how to fix this?? I thought about a bit of epoxy. Just a drop to hold the thing back together. I also thougth about using something to epoxy under the backside of the pointer to reinforce the joint. But I assume the weight of the pointer is factored in and if I increase the weight with any sort of reinforcing, the speedo will either not work, or at best, will be inaccurate. The rest of the pointer is on the glass below the face.

Any help, any suggestions, will be appreciated.

I'd head to the yard and see it you could find a suitable replacement pointer. Should be able to press it on.

This is gonna be coming out of his allowance I hope.

The pointer is pretty light - I'd guess the spring in the speedo head (like a watch spring) is more of a factor in the "accuracy" of the reading. I suggest you try and fix it - check out your local hobby shop for ABS shapes, and pick something that's roughly the size of the pointer. Depending on how fussy you are, you could either glue it across the flat front of the pointer, or try and drill a pocket in the hub to accept the new pointer. Butting the broken end up against the stub would probably work too. I'd put a thin piece of plastic behind it and glue it with ACC. Delicate work, but no more delicate than the kind of things scale modelers build.

Tim - That was kinda the line of thinking I was using before. But my head was a little cloudy from the disbelief the little tyke did this.

Can I say I flipped out? Anyway, I see your point on the spring. And I used to build models through high school so there might be hope.

Roboter - I dont' know if the pointer could be removed. It appears fairly permenant.

I'll be headed down to the Jeep junkyard on monday. They had another one but it was not in as good a shape.

First priority is to fix the one I have.

Hey my CJ5 just came with that speedo! It <may> not work ever again for me, so I'll have to look at it, but if it's not suitable for me to try and use, want it?

Edit, mods, sorry I know this isn't the classifieds. But yeah just want to help out.
Edit again... Sorry different speedo, mine goes to 9... My bad.

Sammy, unless it's really damaged, I bet your speedo is repairable.

If I can't get this one fixed, I think I'm going to order the NOS from Pete Debella. But on a bright note, I did get the pointer off the shaft so I can at least have a shot at repairing it.

Thanks for the tip Roboter, I would not have looked at doing that unless you suggested it.
