Hi all, this is kind of a weird question and I hope it applies to this forum. With gas prices the way they are I want to find something thats cool and economical. I had been told that the Flathead 4 engine gets good mileage. Has anyone here actually figured out what they get out of theirs? I'm deciding between a Willys, a 4 cyl. Wrangler, or a stock cherokee with the 4.0. My first choice is the Willys or early cj-5. Thanks in advance.

I had a cherokee withe the 4.0. The milage was not that good. And it got worse with 33 and a lift. Did you say cool and economical? Good luck with that!

I was getting almost 20 mpg highway with my 93 cherokee.

Dummy was daily driving a CJ-6 with a Dauntless V6 to work and was averaging about 20 mpg highway also.

Honestly, gas with one of these vehicles is not the biggest expense. Buying and maintaining a vehicle adds up.

    Close - 'bout 17.5-18.5 in the CJ-6 with the 225, 4.88s, 31s, and NV3550.

My '95 2.5L, AX-5 Wrangler got about 17-19mpg when stock with 4.10s and 225/75-15s,but if there was a headwind it'd drop to about 14-15mpg.

My '99 4.0L, AW4 XJ Sport got about 17-20mpg when stock with 3.55s and 225/75-15s.

The XJ would really get impressive mileage if I kept the speed down. Back when it was still stock I had to limp at 55-60mph behind a buddy on the way home from Moab because he had front axle troubles. I got 24.5mpg. Incredible.

If you're looking for mileage and overall driveability I'd say XJ.

My 00' TJ w/ 5sp manual got around 19-21mpg with 3.56 and 30x9.50R15 and a proper drive pattern. When I put a FIPK in it it got 20 - 22 mpg. When I lifted it and put 32x11.50R15 on it it still got 19-21MPG. My truck used to get 26+ mpg with summer fuel and 17 ish with winter fuel. Now with the ULSD I only get around 20 in the summer and around 16 in the winter. Oh well. I am starting to go off topic. sorry.:oops:

    Hi, just 2 weeks ago I traded my '88XJ 2.5l AW4 and 4.56 gears with 31x10.50's. For a '61 Willy's CJ5.
I got 16mpg in winter, 20 in summer, and 22 on 225x75's stock. My '89 XJ with 4.0l on 31's and 3.55 gears got 18 MPG @ 256k . My ZJ with 5.2l and 3.73's with 32 inch tires only gets 14 MPG. LOOKs are not cool with todays gas prices.

I could have sworn you said 20, oh well. I've forgotten how old I was (no joke, I had to look at my drivers license) so getting this wrong doesn't surprise me. R)

Honestly for the original poster, if you want gas mileage you're not going to find much better than 20 in any jeep, and probably lower. With an XJ you'll get the best that you'll find, and they sell pretty cheap most of the time.

Shoot if I drive my CJ at 45 or 50 I get 10 mpg at 30 or below around 15 mpg remember this is an industrial low RPM motor F-HEAD. Slow is the way to go.

The Sixty gives me about 17. However I'm not a speed deamon either. 45 to 50 mph is my top and usually much lower. Do a lot of dirt road driving.

How ever, my gas mileage suffers greatly when the local yocals decide they don't want to pay for their own fuel. Prices are hovering around 3.26 (lowest) or so for regurgular, and diesel is 3.85 a gallon.:(

Gonna start parking in a big pool of water and run a wire to the body work and one to the puddle and just wait for the shouting to start. :):coffee:

This is a quote from 1960willyscj5, don't know why it didn't give them credit.:? How ever, my gas mileage suffers greatly when the local yocals decide they don't want to pay for their own fuel. Prices are hovering around 3.26 (lowest) or so for regurgular, and diesel is 3.85 a gallon.:(

Around here regular is 3.15 and diesel is between 4.099 or 4.199. I want you diesel prices. You probably would like my regular prices. I still don't have my JEEP on the road so I can't get gas yet. She wil be there this year though. I need a licenced vehicle for the Jeep Jamboree @ killington, Vt. this year.

In my '5, I can get 21+ MPG on a freeway. Around town, when I keep the RPMs low when shifting, I can get 18MPG.

    F-hed w/ OMIX electronic Dist, Solex carb, Warn O.D., 6.50 - 16 tires.
