My D18's parking brake assembly was totally removed by one of the PO's. At some point I will run the parking brake through the backing plate in the rear. By removing it I wonder if it would also mean replacing your rear drive shaft?

Can you clarify the question a little? Your D18 should have originally been equipped with a parking brake actuated by a cable, connected to a handle under the left side of the dash panel.

Are you looking to get rid of the under dash handle or the transfer case mounted parking brake?

I'm a little confused also. You should already have a hand brake? Also If you remove the brake assy you dont need to change drive shaft (see other thread from bergy) but you will have to install updated backing plates that have the rear emergency levers that work the shoes as per later models. Can't remember if ore law requires E-brake for tags?

What you're saying is you want to use a different lever. The brake is on the back of the transfer case.

The PO did it to mine, it looks like he just took a park brake handle off of a junked passanger car and mounted it between the seats. Mine has the park brakes on the rear axle not the transfer case. It has a cable that comes up in a u shape from each brake with a flat peace of metal folded in half and bent in the same shape as the cable with a hole drilled though it and an eye bolt through the hole that is attached to the handle.

Kind of shade tree mechanics but it seemed to work ok. It frees up a foot when stoped on a hill.R)

The parking break from an old VW bug might possibly work.
You are probably trying to find something like the one the M38-A1 uses. Isn't it between the seats?:?:coffee:

Steal the parking brake setup off of an M38A1.

As mike said, a lever from an M38A1 should work. I think some Postal Jeeps also used this type of lever.

Got a boneyard nearby? Take a look at the levers on XJs and ZJs... they might be made to work, you'll probably need to make some custom cables. If you upgrade to 11" drum brakes in the rear that used the service brake as the parking brake, the XJ/ZJ set ups (cable with equilizer) might work in combination with the 70's left and right cables to the wheels (available from places like 4WDH, Jeepdoc.com, etc.)
