CJ8 half top transplant?

Has anyone tried placing a CJ8 Scrambler half top onto a commando?

only specs I could find was the CJ8 is 65.3" wide and the commando 65.2".
I'm sure there is some fab work needed (when isn't there). If the top would clear the doors.
Just can't find a commando half top locally. seems I have better luck with the CJ's

 

I think you'd be better off shortening a Jeepster full-length hard top. Pretty sure it will be less fab work, since the top will already fit the windshield and the doors. I think the biggest problem with the CJ-8 top will be the shape of the windshield - the CJ-8 will have the late CJ-5-style windshield that narrows toward the top (trapezoid shaped), and the Jeepster windshield is already different from the CJ's. Plus I believe the CJ-8 half-tops are scarce and $pendy, if you can find one... not that many CJ-8s were built, and they are popular.

 

Speaking of shortening a full hardtop here's a little number I've been working on. Not sure what I'll be doing for a bulkhead yet. Although the Jeepster Half Cab and the bulkhead that isn't rusted away at the bottom are relatively hard to come by I'd think a Scrambler might be harder to find.

 

I know someplace that made the CJ-8 hardtops, I ran into them searching for a half top myself for my topless half cab. I know there are some places that make them, but I'm not really sure about the pricing on something like that. I assume really expensive. One of the few places I've found a Jeepster half top was J&W auto-wreckers in CA, $650 for a top, by the time I ship it to Canada it would've cost more than I payed for the Jeepster itself. I understand your dilemma, I'd say cut down your original top too. Another issue with that, again is the bulkhead, apparntly a good one is hard to come by. My problem is is I have a nice bulkhead but no top!

 

That was my original thought take a full top and chop it. Just happened to come across the cj8 top. Any other picts of your top?
I like the straight back look on the half top and have been playing with ideas on how to do it with out major work on my part.

If possible I'd love to see a few more picts of the slant back

 

I'd think you could make the back straight if you could resize (shorten) the window glass or find another donor for the right size glass.

Depends on how good you are at metal fab, I suppose.

 

Another closer up picture. Only other pictures I have right now are of it upside down on my garage floor while I was piecing it together. I started this about three years ago, hoping to get back to it this year. I'd thought of a flat back but with this design I'll get more room behind the seats and I wanted something unique. I've seen other full tops cut down and flat backed and figure why do something that's already been done .

 

The Scrambler half top is too tall for a Jeepster. Windshield's all wrong too. Too bad you're not closer- I have the front half of a hard top I'd give ya. I could use a Scrambler half top, too...

Here's a link for a commando 1/2 cab in UTah for 200.00...I could check it out if you were interested. I dont think there's a bulkhead.
