how far does the tube go into the "C"?? I am going to try my hand at cutting down arear axle if i ever get my hands on the truck from work. The front looks like it would be the same but i was curious bout how the Cs mount.

As you can see in the above pic the tube goes almost all the way through the C casting.

Fronts are much more easier to narrow than rears. Rears typicaly require a jig to keep them straight and aligned.

God give me strength. I catch myself drawing up plans for mine, taking some cue's from yours... Gonna have to wait for a few years until my Jeep's are done... But it would be cool, the only Junior in HS to drive a buggy on the weekends... hmmm...

Well I've been away for awhile and haven't done any updates. Coby called me and wanted to see an update so here it is. I actually haven't been doing a lot of work on it the past couple of months. Unfortunatly, I had been looking for a job for most of that time. I'm once again starting work tommorrow at a new shop doing some fabrication and machining so hopefully I'll be crankin' on this again.

Now for the pics. My folks came into town and I decided I should bolt on as many parts as I could so it would look like something. I'm starting to think it looks pretty cool. I finnally think I have a solution that I like on the front coilover mounts. I need to work on the panhard mount so that I can cycle the suspension to make sure everything clears. I've also been designing my own steering arms and started to do some sheetmetal work. I hate doing sheetmetal work!!!

Well since I've been working I finnally decided it was time to buy a drill press. Plus they were on sale at sears. So now I could finnally drill some tabs to mount my panhard to the front axle. I think I finnally came up with a setup that I'm decently satisfied with.

Don't worry, its getting more plating etc...., I just tacked it together so I could cycle the suspension and make sure nothing hits or binds before I commit to it. I need to pull the front end out to finish up all the welding, not to mention the gears and locker.

    Some cycleage pics;

So at this point most of the suspension design is done. I still need to work on the bumpstops and do some little stuff here and there, but most of the hard part is done. Now I just need more money so I can rebuild the axles and buy tires, after that its time to run fuel and brake lines, exhaust, d-shafts, and wiring. I just might have it running by summer! :driving:

    Enjoy!

    Still working on my POS.

Trying to get the front done and finish some of the little detail stuff while I save some cash for gears.

Got the rear cage area done. The sides are done as well as the small tubes that go for and aft to form the rear fenderwells.

    Rear bumpstops were redesigned.

Panhard mount is finnally done and all the links are welded up.

Front coilover mounts done and braced. Over engine hoop has the tube clamps so it can be removed if need be.

I just won a dana 60 low gear diff on ebay so hopefully soon I'll start putting these axles together. Now if someone would just come through with money to buy my old axle and tires I could buy new tires and get this thing rolling!

    Enjoy!

BTW, Coby made a little visit a few weeks ago. Sounds like he a Alicia are doing ok, just very busy at the moment. Thought ya'll might want to know.

Hey Kevo, I'm pretty new here... actually I just picked up my 1st CJ5 (mine anyway) last Tuesday and I can't get enough of this site. Fortunately I found this thread and I must say I am in total amazement! I know this is second nature to you but man, it ain't to me. I can design, draw and even technically draft... and I have some cool ideas, but I don't have a clue about how you do what you do in fabrication. As a result, I am paying for all the fabrication that gets done on my rig(s) and those shops have nothing on you! You do amazing work! I read every page and post to this point from start to finish in hopes it would be done by the end. Now I just can't wait to see the next installment! Keep up the cool and amazing build.

Man the magazines should get ahold of you!

Thanks for the compliments! I kinda wish it was done to!R) If you can do technical drafting you can do this. Its just one part at a time thats all. Draw it up to see if it looks like a good idea and then start cuttin out parts. You start knowing nothing, learn one thing and just keep on going.:)

Almost done with the drivers side rear lower link. I added the small anti-roll link to it to keep the lower link from rotating due to the coilover being mounted above center. I also put some gussets on to help tie the johnny-joint to the link better.

I also did some work on the front bumpstops.

    Its all in the details,

I've been working quite a bit the past 3 weeks, but now I'm starting to catch a break and so I'm back to workin on the jeep. Here's a little update.

Finnaly got the steering shaft hooked up. It was easier than I thought, I just needed the right u-joint. Got a flaming river one, pretty quality joint!

Made a battery mount. For some reason this took forever to do.

I've finnally acquired all the parts to swap the diffs in and set up the gears. I started doing that tonight and its going much easier than I thought. Mostly due to using the old bearings as "set up" bearings.

Here is a gear size comparison for you. On the left is a toyota 5.29 gear set, on the right is my new D70 5.13 set. Hmmm.....R)

Hopefully soon I'll be sliding this axle back under the jeep fully assembled!

    Enjoy!
    Kevo

PS. Found out my trusty toyota has a badly spun rear wheel bearing. Not sure what I'm gonna do to fix it yet. Now 2 out of 3 don't run, Hmmmm.....

AWESOME Job!! I like your axle choice also. I bought a new Dodge W350 back in '88 with 4.56 geared Dana 70/60 axles under it and in another year or so they are going in my '55 Willys P/U! The rear duallies is the reason for the narrow rear axle. The rear is narrower to get proper tracking as I recall.
