did all f134s use the same starter? If not what years did they change. My main question is if a starter from a 61 will fit a 63? Thanks

Nope, there were two 6 volt & a 12 volt version., however the 6 volts work fine on twelve. :)

Other than that on F4s the tooth counts & mountings never changed so you can swap'em to your hearts content. :)

That's right, the early 2A's were different from what came after, IIRC they changed at the same time that the L head camshaft went from chain driven to gears.

My experience is a bit different. I replaced the 129 tooth ring gear on the original flywheel while the motor was rebuilt. When it returned, the original flywheel threw chunks inside the bellhousing. I ordered a replacement flywheel and continued the build up (included rebuild of generator and starter). And, at the conclusion, the starter would not engage the ring gear. back and forth with the starter rebuild shop. They finally asked me about the ring gear and I found the comparison of the three ring gears in the Tech Section. It appears that my Flywheel was mounted with the 124, not the 128. The 1/4 inch difference is about a tooth depth.

I have not gotten to a stage where I can easily pull the flywheel and replace it with the new ring gear that is still on the cracked, original flywheel.

hmm its has been a long time but if memory serves me right you could have a L head flywheel and that may be the problem,if someone swoped it out,not reall the best person to be giving advise here, but i do have a L head motor with a F head fly wheel so they will bolt up,as far as any difference in the fly wheel itself only one i know of is the timing marks, but the ring gear is definetly different between the L head and the F head, hope that might have shed some light on the subject

L-134 used three different flywheel ring gears, 97, 124 and 129 tooth. For the universal jeep lines the 97 tooth was used in the MB and the CJ2/2A. The CJ3A and the early M38 used the 124 tooth. The late CJ3A and M38 and the F134 powered M38A1, CJ3B, CJ5/6 through 1971 used the 129 tooth ring gear. The 97 tooth ring gear used the MZ4113 starter with a 10 tooth pinion. The others used the 9 tooth pinion. The switch from the 124 to 129 tooth ring gear occurred the same time as the switch from the small frame open nose starter and the bellhousing with the starter sahft bushing in the rear face to the large frame closed nose starter and the bell housing without the starter shaft bushing in the rear face. The small frame starter mounts with two 3/8" bolts and the large frame starter mounts with two 1/2" bolts. So when doing swaps the starter, bell housing and flywheel ring gear should be of the same familly. Also note that in many instances the 129 tooth flywheel rubs the older small bellhousings with the 3/8" starter bolt holes.
