    Hey all
I would like to get my hands on an older cj but my soon to be wife can not drive a stick and I would really like an auto. Did any of the cjs offer an auto or do I need to by a wrangler? Also how hard would it be to put an auto in an older cj if they did not offer it.?

Yup, 1976 came the CJ7 with the Auto, it had the length so it could afford it. It was backed with the quadratec IIRC, take it or leave it... I'd leave it... But a lot of the guys here (Tim) Like them.

Nothing wrong with Quadratrac, just needs to be properly fed and watered so to speak as I understand it.

Yesir, that's it, but I also heard it eats tires fast because it's like running a Jeep in 4 wheel drive all the time, literally. Also heard stretched chain nightmares.

It seems the main reason for introducing the CJ-7 in 1976 was to offer a short-wheelbase CJ with an automatic. It has a 10" longer wheelbase than the CJ-5, long enough for Jeep's automatic (the TH400), and the same wheelbase as a Wrangler. The earlier CJ-6 has a long enough wheelbase for the TH400, but also obvious problems as a mainstream offering. In 1980, Jeep went to the Chrysler TF9xx in the CJ-7.

The GM TH350 can be put in CJ-5s fairly easily with an adapter kit. Any other automatic is longer, and driveshaft length will be problematic.Look at the Novak site for some basic info http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/cj5_55-71_swap.htm

...not a CJ, but don't forget about the Comando. Doors make them easier than CJ to get in and out.....

Teach the poor girl how to drive stick.:)

Seriously, the only reason I have an auto in my car is because I live in a large city with terrible traffic, and I spend a lot of time eating in my car.

I would happily drive a jeep with an auto. I just haven't found the right combination at a price I would pay that will fit in my 5. I gots a bad left leg and pushin that clutch is gettin a little harder than it used to be.

Early cj"s are unique. Not only small and personal but the ride is so totally different partly due to the required shifting (sometimes double clutching) and if you are going to 4 wheel it, it"s nice to idle down hill at times (no braking) and enjoy the view. Just nothing like. Teach her to shift. She will thank you for it later.

I know it's not a CJ, but wouldn't the Commandos or the Waggys/Gladiators have been the first Jeep products to be delivered with slushboxes?

I think the 1962 Wagoneer with the cast iron Borg-Warner automatic was the first. They had 1-speed transfer cases, the Dana 21.

Not too hip on the Utility Wagons and VJ Jeepsters... possible one of those was earlier, maybe in 2WD form.

    myth
    double myth

the chain nightmares are from folks who don't service/maintain the Qtrac.
best full time system ever made IMO.
mountain drivers would be more apt to wear tires and chains from all the turning.
but any mountain car will eat tires...

Don't think so...I know my '52 2WD wagon was column-shift with BW Overdrive. The OD was supposed to kick in automatically above a certain speed...would that qualify as an auto trans? ;)
