How many 72 cj 5 are out there and....

How many of you have 72 cj5 and do you find, like me , this year is terrible to work with. It seems to me this particular year is very hard to find parts and information for. I feel like I have the ugly step child of the Jeep family.

 

Eh, It aint so bad, sure it takes a month or two to find a clutch cable, but its worth it...


Of course I've got it worse than you do. My 72 has a 70 body on it! You wanna talk about having a hard time finding parts!

 

your 72 used a clutch cable?

I have a 73 which uses a clutch cable, don't know if they are the same, but can you tell me where you did end up finding one?

 

The '72 came from the factory with a clutch cable. There was a service kit from Jeep to replace it with the '73-75 mechanical linkage, since the cable was very troublesome. You should be able to get a replacement cable from Krage, Walcks. etc.

jwnorsk, the intermediate Jeeps ('72-75) are the black sheep (different but similar metaphor!) of the Jeep CJ line. They seem to have much worse parts support than earlier or later models.

 

thanks, I'll try them. yea, it seems anything after 69 and before 76 parts and after market goods are somewhat scarce.

 

With the 70 body, I ahve the trought the floor pedals, so i actually ended up using a cable for a late 60's v6. If you search, you might still be able to find my thread on here about my clutch cable. There was a lot of info in there covering alot of years.

thanks, that was huge. I think I have the 8122225 but mine does not come up through the floor but attaches to a bearing area where one side attaches the clutch rod that comes through the fire wall and the other attaches to the end of the cable, then onto the clutch.

Ive got a 72, I live in Ft. Lauderdale..and I love it. Anyone ever hear of swapping out the brakes to go with 4 wheel discs?

I have a 72. was looking specifically for that year for odd reasons and it took over a year to find one. (not a tub or in 35,000 pieces that is)

 

Try finding parts for a 72 commando...

 

'72 cj5 right here !! . I feel your pain , LOL.
I just think of mine as a 73-75 with a clutch
cable. I pick up all the linkages off a Craig List seller and going to post some pics and ask for some help here... to get rid of that cable.

 

72 here as well except mine has been severly molested (by Me) and the best I can say is that it is still mostly Jeep.

 

72's arn't that bad, but they are a little bit odd. I tried really hard to make my cable clutch work smoothly but finally gave up and installed all the clutch linkage from a 73-75 (problem solved) I have installed front disk brakes from a 78 CJ ,next I am going to get rid of the prestolite alternator and install a Delco, I am not having any problems with the presolite but it only puts out about 30 amps at best. I just replaced the points ignition with a GM HEI from a Chevrolet 250 6cyl and I am also going to install power steering. After you get rid of all the wierd stuff that they were built with, 72's aren't that bad. All the changes that I am talking about are pretty much bolt on operations( very little fabrication work)

 

i have a 72 as well and love it. it was treated like a red headed step child by all the po's (how many? who knows) i am slowly trying to polish it back to beauty but as you said it is hard to find parts, but even in its current shape in a crowd of jeeps mine gets the attention. plus the roar of the v-8 turns the heads as well. i didnt know about the problem of finding parts for this year but it isnt so bad, reminds you you have something special.

 

You reach a point with the intermediates where you get the 4WD Hardware catalog, and send it straight to the trash can. Only time I really bother to look at them is for lockers and such....and ideas for stuff to fabricate myself, to fit my bastard child.
