Really REALLY bad sound.

Yeah I know it was stupid, but WhenI say outta town I mean outta country. I could not let it sit at pep-boys that long. Like i said I hope, and I mean Really hope it is the manifold that crapped out on me, I dont think I am ready to re-build a motor quite yet. I also dont trust the mech shops around here, and i dont think re-doing and intake/exhaust gasket can be that hard.:v6:

 

Okay, this is now really starting to annoy me. Apparently it is not my exhaust, today when I started it my choke stuck again, engine revved way up and no sound. I think "cool it went away" then I hit the gas and this sound came back. this is the best recording I could get. if you listen closely you can hear the clicking.:evil:

BTW way it is pretty hard to drive and operate a cellphone camcorder.

 

head gasket? i had one go in my nissan pickup and it sounded like yours did in the video. kind of the same situation to, stopped at a store and it was fine when i stopped and when i came back out and fired it up it made that sound.

 

What about exhaust manifold gasket right off the head? If it was the head gasket, wouldn't you see something leaking as well as hearing it?

 

mine didnt leak any thing! didnt smoke/steam nothing. at first i thought it was a exhaust leak but i wasnt that lucky. not saying thats what it is i was just trying to throw some ideas out there from some past expirience as to what it may be.

 

Well, I do leak oil out of my Valve cover I guess that is what is meant by head gaskette? If so that is about a $35.00 fix with cover and gaskete. If not Please elaborate. Also if was an exhaust leak would I not hear at all time not just when I push he gas pedal. Any other time it runs and sound fine. I may be looking in the totally wrong direction but I supect throttle or carb. You can hear what I mean when I change gears in the vid.

 

Pay attention to the frequency of the noise. Stand next to the engine and see if the noise is double time in relation to the crank. If it is it's in the valve train. If not it's in the rotating assembly. Anything in the lower end will have a fairly deep clunk type sound. Valve train noises and exhaust noises are a more tic tic type sound. You can also pull your valve covers and start it and see that each rocker is doing it's job. Be quick about it though. Having a push rod bouncing off the cam can do a lot of damage. If the motor is gunked up run some marvel mystery oil in it. That stuff is amazing. Good luck.

 

I just listened to the video. That sounds like an exhaust leak to me. Let it cool completely. Then start it up and quickly before it gets hot run your hand down around the exhaust manifolds with out touching them. If it's as bad as it sounds, you will feel the exhaust blowing out of the new hole and that will tell you if that is what it is. Don't burn your self. I hope it is that simple.

 

Valve cover gasket is the rubber gasket that seals the valve cover to the top of the head. Head gasket is the high-pressure gasket between the cylinder head and the block.

The most likely candidate is the exhaust manifold gasket. These engines leak between the manifolds and the engine block very often. If you have an exhaust manifold leak, between the manifold and the block, parts are cheap but it's a lot of labor.

 

Jack mine didnt make the sound untill i mashed the gas, if thats what you were saying, that it sounds good until you mash it.

 

The exact same thing is happening to my '73. I get that sound only when I mash on the gas in second gear. Is the Head gasket or Exhaust Manifold gasket the culprit.

 

Thank you all, Imma hafta mess with it when I get back from short deployment middle of next month, by then I should have the money to mess with it. It just annoys the **** outta me. I was planning on going out to Jacksoville when I got home now I gotta mess with this and postpone my trip.

 

stewed, it could be either one. Does it just do it in second gear? if so thats kind of strange to me. you could do a compression test to see if its a head gasket.
