My speedometer has a cable that comes out of the back of it and is cut about two feet from the firewall. So i bought a new speedo cable. I have no idea where the other end goes into. I know that it goes somewhere into the T-case, but im not sure where, it is also all covered with grease so it is hard to distinguish what what is. If anyone has any pictures of where the cable goes into it would be VERY helpful!!

    thnx in advance!!

Screws into no. 59 in the pic. 60 is the gear itself. Pic is from the passenger side of transfer case.

okay so i got my speedo cable in and it kinda of works, the odometer turns, but the speedometer is stuck on 0, i took the glass plate off and it looked like the pin was out a little, i puched it back in, but it still doesnt work. Do i just need tobuy a new speedometer, or is there anything i can do, also any ideas where i can get one, it doesnt need to be original, i just need a cheap one that works.

Try the search function for this website. I think I remember a previous thread about someone that was rebuilding a speedometer.

Here's the thread. Doesn't have any detail about fixing the works though.
    http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42640

The induction motor and odometer are like clockwork - delicate - so don't mangle them if you take the speedo head apart. Probably the induction motor is gunked up with dust and dirt, and if you clean it very carefully it will work again. The odometer is connected to the cable by gears, so if it turns that means that motivaton is getting to the speedo head via the cable. The needle only moves by a magnetic field pushing against a little spiral spring, and is mounted on jewels just like a clockworks. Again, it's delicate, so if you try to take it apart, be careful and gentle.

well it cant get any more broke than it already is, i guess i will take it apart and try to fix it and if not then ill just buy a new one anyway, i dont think its gonna work though because the little spring looks mangled, but maybe thats all i need, but where am i gonna get one of those?

any ideas how much a new one would cost, it seems like around $80??

Mangled spring ... that's bad. Unobtainium except for a speedo shop AFAIK. Those shops are around, but cater to the classic car crowd. Likely cost more to have them fix it than a repop if they are available. Check the Jeep specialty places - Walck's, Turner, etc. Look in the "where to buy parts" sticky thread.

You maybe could take the spring from a salvaged unit, but the balance between spring force and cable speed is precise. You could probably make it work, but I don't know how accurate it will be.

FWIW, there's a place here in Denver that rebuilds old speedos for classic cars. Pricey I'm sure, but they do the whole shebang as far as mechanical, refinishing, painting, restoring the numbers, etc. I'm planning on taking mine there to see what they can do and the price, but I'm a long ways from needing that yet. Give 'em a call. I noticed the other day that they've moved, but I don't know the new address.

thanks for the info, i think i will just buy i new one if you think i wont be able to fix the mangled spring, I dont need it to be the exact original refurnish or anything, i guess ive got to start shopping for a speedometer. Will any mechanical speedo work, or does it need to be a jeep one to fit the cable?

Replacements are going to be full replacements.

Just don't hook the other two gages up.

Any replacement CJ speedometer will work, pick the style you like best and go with it.
