Good deal for headers?

    I have an oppurtunity to pick up some headers for my 71 225V6 for $75. A pic is in the link below.

    Good deal assuming no cracks & warpage? I can deal w/ sandblasting and spray painting with some VHT paint. I'm already hoping to go dualie and I like this idea better than going w/ a Buick driver's side exhaust & routing everything under the Jeep.

    Why not go with new hedmans from summit for $120?

    Summit has those for $160+shipping right now. Havn't read up on Hedman's yet. Not even sure the brand of these headers.

    EDIT: Their eBay store has them for $157 shipped

    Just my 2 cents:rofl:
    Do you do alot of offroading?
    I have headers on my 89 Wagoneer.....I have to constantly tighten and/or change gaskets because of leaks. (tap-tap-tap drives me :mad: ). If the body and/or frames flexes or if the exhaust drags then the leaks begin!

    Don't know if others have the same experience. Cut the flanges off the headers so each tube is separate which seem to help...

    The Jeep will rarely be used for offroading. I like the idea of cutting the flanges though.

    I have headers on both jeeps. I dislike tightening bolts a tad less than I dislike the gasket burning out when the bolts loosen. But I keep up with them most of the time. But what I really dislike is having the header right behind the tire. I took out a fender outlet header last wheeling trip. My front tire slid down a rock and the first thing after the front tire is header. At least up in the frame they have a little protection. Another issue with the fender wells is room for mufflers. I found some shorter ones last time I bought but the previous ones left very little room for a turn out.

    As for buying used headers; Typically headers are pretty thin material to begin with. Any rust on a header doesn't leave much room for sanding/blasting and painting. I would look over a set of used headers very closely for soft/thin spots. If the headers new are truely $120 I think $70 is a lot to pay for a used set.

    In 15 years of having the same headers on my 71 Jeep I have never had a single header bolt come loose. When I rebuilt the engine 2 years ago the bolts were still as tight as the day I put them in. The bolts on my collectors have worked lose a couple of times though.

    the best thing I did was replace the oem bolt (about an inch long) with a grade 8 that was 1 1/4 long. I check mine about every month or so and the are still tight from the motor rebuild 3 yrs ago.

    Well I'm FINALLY getting around to installing my fenderwell headers. the OEM exhaust has holes throughout it and I'm replacing half the drivetrain while I'm at it.

    Question: Will these work with the OEM ross steering? From initial glances, it appears they will go up & over the steering box but don't want to get half way through and discover they don't fit.

    As for the mufflers, can't find any that have the 3 bolt pattern I need for the headers. Will I need to have someone weld up a custom flange?

    You can get a set of "Purple Hornie's" from summit that are glass packs with a flange and turnout welded on them allready for direct to header exhaust. Last Mufflers i used on my 68 were turbos and had turnouts but everything was just clamped with no welding. This time i am thinking a set of Flowmaster's if i can come up with a set that fits.

    I would stay away from headers in my opinion and experience. 225 like backpressure and like having a crossover tube also. The minimal horsepower gain isnt noticable at all. I tried running it with offy intake, holley 390 dialed in, and hei, with cam so it breathed well. I was going the header route cause I was mainly driving alot of highway at the time and could use the extra power curve of the headers on the hills. Ended up selling the headers and going with single out the back with stock manifolds. Way quieter, less heat, sounded better, and it was nice and tucked out of the way.

    were can i find header gaskets to fit my 231 buick v 6? i though my cj5 had the 225 but i found out it dont :( o'rilleys auto said they would have to special order them and it would take 5 days and would cost me about $35.00 bucks.

    I have found that most of the time the 225 and 231 gaskets are interchangeable... Yes, I have always had to order them as well.

    I run the AA outside the rail headers - and now the block huggers from Novak are about to go on a project.

    I got my from oreily's this am just order a set for a 1980 buick regal with a 231, btw difference between the 225 gaskets they got me and the 231 gaskets. 225 gaskets had 1 gasket per exhaust outlet, 231 had 1 gasket for each head. and the boxes said they were interchangable felpro gaskets. btw oreilly's got them overnight had them next morning and they were 12 bucks

    Just as a heads up there is a huge difference between header gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets. You really want to use header gaskets with headers unless you want to change them out again soon.
