Hope I am doing this right. If not tell me.
I am a new member. and I am trying to find parts to get my 1955 CJ-5 back on the road. I have looked at every site I could find on the net and can't seam to find the Dana axle, I have in my jeep. It is a 10 spline on one end with a key slot and threads on the other. The paper work I received when I bought my jeep said it had a Dana rear end with 1965 Mustang disc brakes. But I have a friend down the street that has a garage full of 1965 Mustang Hubs and axles, and he says never seen a Mustang, hub like this one, and the man I got jeep from tells me he never seen a jeep hub, like this one. and not being around jeeps all that long , well you can see my problem. I Need need some encouragement before I have a senior melt down.

Sounds like it could be just what they told you. Original 44 rear end (including hub), with Mustang brakes. It is common to swap other brake bracketry on older rear ends.

I was on Dana/Spicer's site a little earlier, mainly cause I was wondering the same thing.

They state if you look on your axle housing just to the right of the cover, there will be an embossed (?)(raised lettering) 44 there, if it's a dana 44. Mine on the rear has this. On the axle tube to the right of this will be casting numbers that tell the date of manufacture, but I am not sure how to read that one.

My front one is a dana25 or 27 and doesn't have that (25/27) number in that position. It does have FRONT embossed on it, however.

    good morning guys,
You have been more then helpful to me and I do appreciate it. What I have is a Dana 44 Tapered axle. I have all the parts coming to get it back together except a Hub key and they said they have them on back order. I checked all the places in Bakersfield, and they said the same thing, they just can't get them. Now let me say this, I have not been sleeping so good sense that axle broke, because I can't find a reason for it braking, and I sure as heck don't want it to happen again. I am thinking about putting the stock drum brakes back on. And if I do, my question to you guys would my wheel still come off under the fender like that if I put every thing back to stock. this is the second time that this has happened to me over the years, The first time it was in my 1937 plymouth coupe and I lost the same wheel, the driver side back, that time the lug nuts came off and it through me off in a deep cannon. This thing is a death trap waiting to happen if I do nothing and I would like to get this problem solved so I can get back to sleeping at night. I am open to any suggestions. A fellow down the street from me gave me a complete front and rear end out of a newer jeep that has the Lock out hubs, and drum brakes, I just have not went and picked it up yet. I know It's a Dana Axle, but it is wider then mine. and I have no Idea what year. just a thought,I may be getting a little to old for this jeepin, But it's sure is fun.

I found my axle numbers by using an inspection mirror. If you're looking at the front of the diff, it'll be on the top left corner on the back. Took me a while, but I found it. Tip: Brakekleen works wonders

    Good morning guys.
Well, with your help I have finally got all the parts ordered to get me back on the road and I couldn't have done it with out your help. You guys have been a great help. The Only thing I haven't been able to come up with is an Outer grease seal protector. When the axle broke it did a number on that protector. I ordered my parts from 4-wheel drive hardware, out of their Fall 2006 vIntage jeep catalog, "page 32" and it shows that seal and protector come as a one item order. but when it came all they sent was the seal. I called them back and they said that is all they ever send. what I would like to know is where can I come up with the protector,
    Thanks again
