I am going to pick up my new fuel tank tomorrow and realized I don't have a new gasket for my sending unit. Can I use RTV or anything like that for the sending unit gasket or will it not hold up to the gas.

Also will I have to drill and tap the side of the filler neck for the overflow hose that comes off of the fuel pump? The guy where I am buying the tank didn't think there was a hole for it. My stock tank looks like the hole was punched, not drilled as some of the material flares in form the hole and is threaded.

I didn't use the gasket that came with my sending unit since it leaked due to the top of the tank flexing. I don't remember what I used but make sure you don't put too much on the sending unit so it oozes out and clogs up the fuel line. Don't ask how I know this.R)

I don't have a tube of RTV with me, but I think the directions warned against using it in direct contact with gas. Better read the label. Unfortunatly I don't know exactly what you can use.

Are you talking about an under the seat tanl or a rear tank? Also if under the seat which type of pick up/sender. Some are banjo lock ring and some screw on?

Under the seat and it screws on with about 6 screws.
I will consult my RTV tube but I tend to lean towards it's probably not the right way to go......just getting impatientR)

Not all, mine has a twist on locking ring that takes an o-ring gasket. I have been told steel replacment tanks for this design are no longer available so I just put in a plastic tank.

i think that's you're best option. Use a "fuel proof" sealant.

DON'T use any kind of RTV. That is, unless you LIKE digging RTV "gummy worms" out of your fuel lines on a regular basis.

Permatex #2 or Indian Head gasket shellac will do the trick. Both are available at any FLAPS.

I think you should use the thicker 3/32 cork gasket material. I just sealed mine with the stuff. Hopefully it doesn't leak now. I just need a fuel pump to try it out.

Just don't use the thick paper gasket material. Don't ask me how I know.

Oh! And my sending unit had 5 screws holding it on. FYI

    Thanks for the replies.
Turns out the Jeep place I went to didn't have either of the 2 tanks they thought they had in stock.
I ordered one and also ordered the gasket and got a gas cap and gromet.
I will try the gasket and if that leaks I'll try the Permatex 2.

Oh btw they made me a great deal for coming down for nothing. I am getting the tank and all of the other stuff plus they are shipping to my house for less then I was originally going to pay for the tank!
I went to 4 West in Colton CA.
