Here you guys go. I painted it all up tonight. I just have to make the mount for the tire to actually bolt to, but i ran out of torch gas :( But i ended up using a socket welded to a nut that was welded to a piece of threaded rod to hold the carrier to the bumper. You will need a ratchet to remove the bolt to swing out the tire carrier but that is fine since i do not open it much and it prevent theft or vandalism. I did do the Dan Stewart 200 lb test and it held up fine. Only issue i do not like is it does wiggle a bit when you grab onto and shake it, but i am not sure if it is the hole jeep moving or just the carrier. so i just need to take it on the trail and see if it holds up.

Looks good Dan, sure your not going to have to beef up your rear springs with all that heavy steel.

Very nice. I'm with you on not needing to open the tailgate often. I the socket bolt captive or does it come all the way out when loose? Also which hinge did you go with? Oh yeah did you already say what gauge steel you used?

if i want to swing the carrier out i ubolt the whoel thing nad it will swing out. I got my higne from Trout industries. I was just going to get the outer sleeve but when i ordred it it was on back order and he had the whole spindle kit, so i just decided to get it all since it was going to be about the same price if i went and got the spindle and bearings from northern Tool. I used 3x3 square tubing abotu 12 gauge. And the sides to the cooler rack is 1x2 1/8 thick square tubing.

Looks good! Very similar to what I've got planned. How heavy is the whole thing minus tire and wheel? Nickmil

Not sure about the weight of it. I think the top portion weighs about 50-60 lbs. and the bumper is abotu 35-40. Not sure if that is average weight for a swing out carrier setup, but i really am not that overkill on teh thickness of metal or anything. I am debating making a way of mounting the sides of the cooler rack to the bracket that the tailgate chains goto. this may give me a bit better support for the rack and prevent anyforward and backward movmennt. I think tha location would do muc hdamage to the body since it is just a point to help support it, not a main wight bearing point.

Is it just the one swivel point, or do you have an upper one?

putting some kind of pin and cotter pin setup like the ones used for nascar hoods at the level of the tailgate chain throughputs would stablize it, and maybe a small rubber block at the top of the tailgate to cushion and remove the rattle?

That is the kinda set up I would like for my '60 CJ5, but without the carrier at the top. I ain't tall enough to reach that far anyway.
