I am going to begin searching for the stock 7 blade fan and see how much it helps. Next up will be a new radiator core, after that I will look into pusher fans.

I do have a question on coolent. Does having too much antifreeze hurt the cooling process? Also the lower hose absolutely refuses to seal up so it does drip some... I will have it sealed somehow before I am done but would the pressure drop effect temp?

Anyone here have an oem 7 blade for sale :)

    Thanks, Chris

Greg - our 'good flaps' are:
Checker - Academy S of Austin Bluffs
NAPA - Academy and Austin Bluffs
Pep Boys - up by Chapel Hills Mall

The Checker out here in Falcon will pull parts from town if you need them, saves the City tax and a trip to town if they have it.

I didn't think Checker and Pep Boys were considered "friendly" or "local"..R)

    absolutely!
to strong a mixture can/will have the opposite effect
    100% coolant is a big no-no..
colder weather extremes do require a stronger mixture though for winter use
a very strong mixture won't allow heat to be absorbed; the coolant becomes "heat saturated" and won't absorb any more.
remember that the water doesn't cool the engine directly; it absorbs the heat and carries it away to the radiator; the coolant raises the boiling temp of the water (in combination with system pressure), and lubricates and prohibits rust/corrosion in the cooling system components.

thanks, i know it has too much now since i dumped a gallon of antifreeze in and then only about 1/2 gallon of water would fit. So I guess I need to drain and refill correctly before I test it out again. That's actually ok since I need to get that hose sealed up.

I plan on testing it tomorrow to see if the lowering and correct mixture help any.

    thanks, Chris

I converted to electric since I bent 2 fans in the water and lost radiators. I now have a 8 blade, 2speed ford hurricane fan off of a SHO tortise. Its on a thermo switch with a toggle interupter switch, no heat trouble anymore!

    Good luck Chris!
I had a FlexALite electric years ago, with thermocouple and manual override (wired direct, not through a relay).
I melted a switch on a hot day... probasbly only a 10-amp switch. The fan was getting older, bearings were going out, it was drawing more amps... scrapped it.
I went back to a manual fixed fan, stock 5-blade IIRC. I had the '71 rad (different from the pre-70 units) recored to a 3-row, used a '73 grille without the big funnel, and used some 1.5x1.5" angle to make a mount that was lower and centered in front of the fan.
No cooling issues now, in any conditions.

Keep us posted on how this 7 blade works for you.

I too have tried just about everything over the years. A huge 7-blade fan from a 455 Pontiac with air mounted to a solid hub I machined to take the place of the fan clutch really did the trick........with two problems. First, it moved so much air that at idle I had to park in the grass or I'd pull up so much dust off the ground that I basically couldn't sit anywhere at idle lol! or everything/body around me got covered in dust, & second, it was very rough on water pump seals & bearings, especially if I hit water with it. I went back to a clutch fan as soon as I returned from CO after using that fan! I now use a plastic Ford ranger cluthc fan from a '90 (I think) & it seems to do fine, but of the two I've found the larger dia. is better. It was a bolt on as tehy both use a 5/8 waterpump shaft & slotted mounting holes. I have an electric pusher fan up front that's been used a lot since I shattered the shroud. I gotta build a new shroud as it really makes a huge difference.

I agree that a flex fan is a very poor choice for a vehicle used off-road with reletively high RPM's per ground speed as the fan pulls so little air in that condition.

Well they had the 7 blade but it was bent so they wouldn't sell it to me. He gave me leads on 2 other places that had one listed so I will have to call them and see. I went for a test drive and everything was great but... I can't really use the test since it was about 25 degrees cooler out today then it was last week. I even had to use the heater :)

A shroud would be the ticket I think. How do you make one?
