My Magnificent Mig Machine Modification

Two other modifications you might consider I've found very handy on my Dad's little italian MIG. One is a switch which allows him to reverse the wire feed, so that you can easily adjust the length of wire protruding when you start. The other is a relay (bypassable) which won't let the wire feed without a ground for the arc. This is not so important under perfect conditions, where you are working on on a steel welding table welding clean, new metal. But we are welding on Jeeps, for crying out loud, and how many times have you had the wire just feed and feed out because the ground clamp didn't make its way through the rust....?

Well since you’re in the MIG mod mode. You might also want to add a delay on arc strike. This is done on the big machines. You pull the trigger and the solenoid for the gas turns on a fraction of a second before welding starts. This gives you a shield before welding. They also have the ability to continue feeding gas for a time after ending your weld.

I was also wondering how long the delay is before you get shielding gas and if you notice it?

 

Didja add a cooling fan while you were at it, or did it have one already?

I'll have to look into that mod....
