Front side view of shackle reversal. And front view, excuse the Texas surface rust, its standard proceedure to sand blast everything here and paint it.

So their frame rails come boxed in already? If so that seems to be the way to go. It saves tons of welding.

I didn't see any pre '76 frame rails listed there, I assume you need to call and ask for them.

that really looks nice. That looks a whole lot better that trying to cobble together a rotted frame. Even affordable. Thanks for the additional pictures!

So, are you building a 71 CJ5? I had them leave the frame rails long and not to cut the ends off, so I could play with the length a bit. If you need any advice let me know, and sit down and plan what you want to do. I would go wrangler springs at this point, if you are going the new frame route.

They are leaving mine long and I will cut it down to size. Do they leave both ends long?

    Why Wrangler springs?

My plan was do go completely stock except for power steering and making the rear bumper double as a crossmember and body mounting point. I'm not looking for anything too wild, just a solid place to mount a 6 pt cage.

I went wrangler springs only because I was starting from scratch (and had to buy new springs any way) and they ride so much better than stock CJ5 or CJ3B springs. I went spring under also, because like you I just wanted a good solid rig and not be wild. I just copied the stock frame, but I did put the back bumper past the body the 2 inchs so the body was flush with inside of the back bumper to protech the body or to mount a tire carrier there, and just add tabs for the rear body mounting points. One other thing, I did not weld the front bumper on or put a front cross member under the radiator until I got the steering mounted, that way I could make sure the steering shaft cleared. I have tons of advise since I already made my own mistakes and some minor things I would have done differnt. So, there is alot of knowlege on this board, so let us help you make this a great project. It is so cool having clean boxed rails to work on.

Would wrangler springs give much benefit in a trail toy? I will not be driving on the road very much. I have other vehicles for that. I don't see the work in changing spring plates and all that to be worth it for something I just trail ride.

I am building mine for use as a daily driver. I think the wrangler springs will be great for that. Should really soften up the ride. I haven't driven it yet (down the highway) but out in the back alley I can tell how much softer it is. It should flex a lot better too. I say wrangler springs all the way.

Exactly what I'm planning on doing. My buddy went with a spring lift on his YJ so he gave me his old springs. Just got a nice clean A1 body so I was going to build a solid back bumper too so I don't crunch in the body. I think I've bent my bumper at least 3 times allready in back...

    pjstud1v,
Nope. Different buddy. Just sounds like they could be twins or something:D

If I go with Wrangler springs, do I still need 2.5" lift springs to clear 33s?

Remember also, that when you are building a frame from scratch you can raise the body mounts up an inch and still have a solid attachment for the body. You do not want to do body lifts with just rubber busings it puts to much strain on the body. But just lifting the frame mounts up will still give a good anchor for the body and gain some lift. For what its worth I am using BD 3.5 lift wrangler springs on my cJ3B and plan on using 33 inch tires. I did not lift my body, but looking back it would have been nice, would have gained me some clearance under the body for the T18 four speed trans. But, the ford T18 four speed has the smallest profile of the truck four speeds, especially the shift tower and fits the stock tansmission hole in the body perfect. Again, happy building and take the time to think everything out. I did a couple of trail fits with the body sitting on the frame to make sure things where going OK.

I got my frame rails today. I ordered them last monday and they are already here. He bent them the next day and shipped them right away. If anyone is thinking about getting these rails go for it. I will start a new thread with the build once I get it started.

I am really looking forward to seeing the progress pictures. I have wanted to build a jeep from the ground up and that sure sounds like a good start.

The amount of lift you will get from the wrangler springs is going to vary a lot depending on how you mount them. You can get Wrangler factory mounts and I that should give you more lift than the stock CJ mounts. The front shackle reversal is also another way to change the amount of lift depending on how you mount the springs.

I have the 3 1/2 inch BDS springs, with the 1 inch lift shackles. (BDS 4 1/2 inch wrangler kit) I used the front rear spring mounts and the rear front spring mounts from a CJ. I used rear rear shackle mounts for a CJ for both front and rear. I have a fiberglass body that gives me about 2" over stock steel body the way it is mounted. All said and done I clear 35s without much chance for ever rubbing. I will need to go to CV driveshafts.

Depending on the amount of sag on the wrangler springs if they are good I would think mounted with the wrangler hardware and a shackle reversal that they would clear 33s.
