Here's some pics of things I have questions about.

1.This is the flywheel. The front plate is loose. Can I just bolt it back down or does it require some kind of gasket?

    2. Can anyone identify this fron axle and differential?

    3. Rear differential. I bought a u-joint which fits but the ubolts they gave me are too narrow. The yoke has spicer imprinted on it. What does this mean?

    4. Another pic of the flywheel

What is the preferred weight oil to put in the differentials?

In the front differential there is a tube coming out of a fitting in the top of the gear case and going up by the radiator and it has a plug in the end of it. Any idea what this is?

it's a 77 model. U bolt was gone when I bought, so I'm gonna measure the yoke and try from there.

What year is this Jeep supposed to be? Do yopu have a copy of the factory manual?

Just to repeat what's been posted -

    Bolt it down.

    Dana 30 - factory axle.

AMC Corporate 20 - factory axle. It means that you have the wrong u-bolts (sorry). Take it to the parts store and match it.

85-90W gear oil. No preference involved - that's what it uses.

Vent tube. The cap is supposed to vent air and keep water out (mostly). It's mounted high to keep water out of the differential in stream crossings.

It's a 77 model. I don't have the manual, but I was planning on picking up a Haynes today. I wanted to try to get the right ubolts, cause with that and the radiator that came in this morning, I should be able to test drive it this evening.

Also, on this model what are the positions supposed to be for the transfer case shifter?

If you plan to do the work yourself, a factory manual will be a big help. I have one for each of my cars.

They are available from other sources too, ie ebay, but the above is where I got mine.

I'd also suggest that, if you have an old-time parts store (called FLAPS around here) in your neighborhood, you go there rather than AutoZone, Pep Boys or such. They will be more willing and able to help you with parts for an old car. Some of the chain stores are ok, but a store that does a business with the local garages will have experienced counter people. The store I go to has had the same two guys behind the counter, Tony and Tony, for the three or four years I've been their customer.

I use the local parts house. We had two but one of them blew down during the storm, so I've recently started using the other one. One of the guys at the counter came from the other one too. He was behind the counter there for about 15 years. I'll stop rambling. You'd suggest a factory manual over an aftermarket repair manual?

Hmmm... ESAB is a brand of welder.

    Should say Lincoln, eh?

(May be a rigid, welded axle. Look up lincoln locker. Definitely take the cover off and look).

Not exactly, I definitly agree with Tim though. Take off the cover and have a look. More than likely a PO welded them together. Hence the magic marker stating its been "ESAB Locked"

A welded axle isn't suitable for the street, but don't worry. AMC 20 axles are cheap and readily available.

What these guys are saying is that the previous owner appears to have welded the side gears and spider gears together. This is a cheap way to have a "locker", or both wheels turning at the same speed, all the time. No differentiation for cornering, so you'll likely get chirping or wheel hop in corners on the street. Most axles allow power to shift from one axle side to the other for smooth cornering. Welding the side/spider gears is a great strain on the axle shafts, and may lead to breakage of something... axle shaft, ring/pinion, ujoints... something will give eventually. The "locker" action will however, be quite effective offroad on hill climbs, in mud, etc... but it can be a problem iff you are on a slippery slope at an angle...
hope this explanation clarifies the comments from the other guys... forgive me if I over-simplified...
And welcome aboard from south-central PA!! :)

Well that's not so bad. It won't be a daily driver, and I certainly won't be driving it in the rain. But, if something does break, ujoints are cheap and I can always get another axle then. How hard are they to change out?

Simple technically, some physical work though. Usually it's best to cut the u-bolts with a grinder or chop saw, then removal is easy. You can swap each of the brake backing plates over as a complete assembly, without opening the hydraulic system. Maybe a 2 on a 1-5 scale?

In other words it's doable for a semi smart person with a strong back. :)
