Look around the local shop here quoted me a price that was a little over a couple hundred dollars cheeper than to rebuild a small block. Wasn't the first one I checked though. I'm gonna bet it depends on where you go and who the jobber is they get the rebuild kit from. Many pluses of going the Buick over a SBC cost is just one on the list.

yeah, I will have the cash to spare for whatever motor i put in after basic and AIT so if it costs me 300 more to use a 225 ohwell, no big deal. Now if it was like over 500 difference, it would get to keep the lhead. But I figure this jeep is already getting some mods so might as well give it a boost in the power dept, and pick up another basketcase at some point to restore.

I like your idea of staying with Jeep power Rat. For some reason it just seems right.

BTW, Thank you for serving our country. Most of us still appreciate it.

Yeah, the decision to join up was long in the coming for me. Im 21, dropped out of college when i was 19 and worked a few crappy jobs. and finally wanting to get back into school and do something worthwhile made me decide army was the way to go. So i leave next wednsday for basic. The jeep will be on hold while I am gone, but I will have cash to work on it when i get back.

Now that I re-read your post, I woudl shy away from any junkyard engine that sat upside-down with the pan removed. No telling if those bores will ever clean up with a mild re-bore...

Buy the 225 and part it out on E-bay to help finance the L-head rebuild?

it hasnt had the pan off for long. all the rust in the cylinders is above the pistons, and is very mild compared to some of the bikes I have worked on. everything on the bottom end still has oil on it, including the pan. Ill pick it up and run my hone through the cylinders and see how bad they look without the rust. if they arent pitted then itll end up a 231, if they are depending on how bad it is, it might end up with parts on ebay.

In my opinion, in the short run, dropping a 350 or simular small block V-8 produces a loud, unrulie beast of a jeep. More power than you ever need, or sometimes want in a off-road capable vehicle. Horsepower ain't everthing and my 225 after spending about 9000.00 bucks makes more ponies than your average 350 chevy anyway. I have a stage 3 buick GNX manifold, turbo and injection system off the 87 GNX 3.8l engine and on the dyno it punches 484 hp 377lbs @ 5400 rpm on pump gas and with the mains and rods strapped it reds out at 9200 r's. And it is still kicking it out since 2002 when I built it. Took alot of time, but to see the look on peoples faces when I spool up the turbo and the pop-off valves let off a dragon shaming hiss! WORTH EVERY PENNY AND CHEWING OUT BY THE WIFE!!!!
