Sorry to bring the rear tank thread up again, but I have done a bunch of reading on this and haven't found a definitiove answer. If I replace my under the seat tank with a 15 or 21 gallon tank under the bed, is there a way to plumb it so the fill tube comes out on the driver's side? It looks like all the tanks' fill tubes are made to come out on the passenger side. The reason I am asking is that I want to put my spare on the passenger side where it belongs. I am down to the frame, so I have a lot of options!
    Thanks.

In reality with a little finagling you could mount them to fill from either side if you want. I don't like the rear as it interferes with a tire rack most run mounted on the back bumper area and can get sideways depending on the lights you choose to run.

I was thinking a TJ or YJ tank worked for driver side fill.

I know I have to remove the support bracket for the draw bar, but I have what I believe is an aftermarket hitch below the standard draw bar mount. That’s going to have to go also, correct? For those who have a rear tank and a hitch receiver, 4F450BA9-0E61-4ABD-BE80-D23EB11F2EF6.jpeg how is your hitch receiver attached?

I made a receiver hitch for my factory drawbar, can't say if it would work with a rear tank.[IMG]

Yes, the tank will need all that space.

I used an aftermarket rear bumper/tire carrier that had a receiver hitch, with bumper supports that slid up the frame rails on the outside.

My 3B has had a left side tank fill since I put the Con-Ferr rear tank in it in the early 70's. I used a filler "bezel" for some AMC CJ version for that.

For the last iteration, I modified a CSI door for I think a GMT400 series truck.

If nothing else, the left side filler is a lot easier to spot for filling where you can actually see it.

For the receiver hitch, it was incorporated into a new rear cross member where it is still out of the way for wheeling.

That cross member is 2x3x1/4" rectangular tube and, similar to the 72+ Jeeps, has gussets running forward on the outside of the frame rails.

Good looking Jeep. I see you have an aversion to having the hood the same color as the rest of the rig.
And are those 2 pictures take at the same place? The ponderosas have grown a bit in the interim.

No P-pines present. That top photo was near Cliff Lake on the McKelevy Lake/North Meadow trail-a place you can't drive too anymore with a +50" vehicle. The trees are young whitebark pine, Englemann spruce, and subalpine fir. The lower was at Noble Lake, Wisconsin Creek on the opposite of the Tobacco Root Mountains and whitebark is (maybe better stated was) the dominant tree. The pine beetles did most of those in. The hood is my home brewed aluminum version and when camping, it always ends up being the kitchen table or worse (packs, boots, tools, etc) so I just bed lined it.

I don't see why you can't flip the standard 15 gal tank around for a drivers side fill. Personally I'd get one that uses the smaller diameter fill, much easier to sort out the filler hose and inlet.
You'll need to cut out the v brace to get decent clearance for the tank. The factory type skid plate is suitable to use for support. As others suggest a new rear crossmember with a built in/ welded on receiver works out best. The drawbar is useless these days and drags a lot if you wheel regularly.
Make sure your sending unit and gauge are compatible, calibrated. The float almost always needs some tweaking. If you don't mind an access through the bed floor, saves future hassles for the float/pickup. Especially so if you use an in tank pump.

I'm fitting one in my '63 build now. I'll post some pics of it after this weekend in my build thread.

My original 71 with rear tank.
    C8A75CE6-6DA2-4782-83DC-D70E8218554D.jpeg

The filler is on the rear passenger side above the brake lights and below the back up lights.
The factory 71 tank bolts in on the 4 corners to small angles bolted to the frame, the V brace has to go just to fit the tank. The factory skid plate is in no way a support for an original rear tank on the early cj5. Never tried but it might actually be possible to remove the pickup with the body on. There is about 3-4” between the tank and floor when installed.

B2DD3078-03E6-4C4B-8F72-815A304F0BC5.jpeg That is the factory 15 gallon rear tank. My home built tire carrier and factory fill spout are in plain view.
