Hello, I am getting towards the wiring phase of my '71 Dauntless CJ5 project. The original wiring was absolute trash with no rhyme or reason to it. Different colors, splices, butt connectors, you name it, it had it.

At this point I am just trying to do some research to get my jeep wired up correctly. To start with I am hoping that some of you can provide some pictures of how your electronic ignition distributors are wired, starter is wired, alternator, and any under the dash wiring.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks- Robert

I used a wiring harness with the wires marked every few inches (EZ harness) and the marked wires are still helping many years later.
Do yourself a favor and create a wiring diagram or chart with how you wired everything up (with colors) since the wire names and fuse panel names don't always apply. I thought I would remember mine, but sure have not.
Add some big ground straps to frame, body and dash.
I got a kit like this with heatsink connectors (not this one) and really liked it and am still using it: 560 PCS Heat Shrink Connectors Qibaok Electrical Connectors Kit Copper Waterproof Marine Automotive Crimp Connector 16-14 22-16 12-10 Gauge Insulated Ring Fork Hook Spade Butt Splices: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

For diagrams, I just hunted on here and printed alot out and used a field service manual. Since my electronics differed from stock, there was no one diagram that applied.

Many years ago I rewired my 71. I used a loom salvaged off an early Bronco and a CJ wiring diagram. It included an actual fuse box and had a couple of added circuits for those additional goodies I wanted to install. Since pre 72 CJ's are so simple, it was a relatively easy task.

Looms off early (vintage) vehicles, such as Ford or Chevy p'ups adapt well to an early CJ. While these are getting harder to find, they are pretty cheap if you pull one out of a U pick yard, and you have a serviceable loom with a fuse box for a fraction of the cost of an aftermarket offering.

Mine had a glass fuse box. Later ones will have a spade style box, which I prefer.

Rewiring is a big job. Get a NEW aftermarket harness!
Everything that cayenne said... and you should consider an alternator with internal regulator upgrade!
You really should have a fuse box, too. LED lights are nice, but not necessary.
The original turn signal controller leaves allot to be desired. Consider a golf cart turn signal switch. Mine works great.
Put all the external wiring in some kind of loom. Even internal wiring should have protection depending on what kind of environment you drive.

Great info from dnb5853. Also I grounded the engine to the frame, the frame to the tub and one more but I can't remember the other. I could not of done it without the help of people on this forum and Walcks for the kit with the instructions. Mad Electric helped with relays, wiring the 12si 3 wire altenator, the HEI and starter. I will try and take pics for you.

There should be a ground from the alternator back to battery or a common ground location. I think this is what Renegade II is referring.
The motor mounts generally will not allow a ground since they have rubber isolators.

I bought the painless performance 21 curcuit harness, and it looks really nice. I am about 4 months away from installing it. You may want to check out the manual regardless of whether you but the harness from them. They also have a couple of nice loom kits.
