    Hello all.
I’m looking for threads or suggestions on removing the T90 and TC as I’m going to rebuild the T90. My question is it possible to just remove the T90 and TC together with out the bellhousing or should that be dropped out too? I’d prefer just the trans and TC but for those that know I would appreciate your experienced knowledge to guide me.
    Thanks in advance.
    Todd

it can be done either way
I myself prefer installing transmission with bell attached

x2, easier to keep the release bearing and fork in place during the install.

So best bet would be to remove the bellhousing, transmission and transfer case together?

I always resurface the flywheel and replace the clutch when I have to pull the transmission.

I know that is The One True Way. But I've never re-faced a flywheel, and have gotten along fine. Lucky I guess.

That's how I do it. I pull the passenger seat and the floorboards then use an engine hoist to drop it to the floor:

I find it goes in and out pretty easy that way. Here I am balancing the the new trans/transfercase/OD for putting it in:

Others prefer to use a transmission jack but lots of us pull it all out as an assembly.

Well, I don't always resurface the flywheel, just do it when it needs it, and it usually does.

I just like to do it all at one time so I don't have to do it over again later on. Heck, I prefer to remove the grill and radiator and just pull the whole power pack for this sort of work, so I can work on it on a bench, but that is mainly because I have some arthritis and it hurts getting up and down from the garage floor.

I use my cherry picker to lower the whole pack into the frame, put a modified furniture dolly under the gear box, fasten up the front motor mounts, then use the cherry picker to raise the transmission into place so I can bolt up the crossmember. Then I install all the clutch linkage and such, so only one trip underneath, and done.

x2, resurfacing is an absolute must when replacing a clutch as far as I am concerned. Resurfacing will insure a really smooth as silk clutch operation. Prevents grabbing and chattering on engagement, even when the flywheel looks smooth it will have hardened spots here and there that seem to grab the disc for some reason.

I evaluate the flywheel condition after removing the pressure plate and disc. Hardened burn spots or scoring usually indicate a Blanchard grind is in order. Just light wear, I usually deglaze by hand sanding or a DA sander with about 150-220 grit paper.
Often, the Blanchard swirls are still evident, so I just deglaze.
As far as what to pull, I almost always include the bellhousing with the trans and T/C. Clean and unbolt the top shifter assy (put it in neutral before you remove). When re-installing, I often cut the heads off (2) about 3”-4” bolts, and lightly slot the shank for a screwdriver. I thread one in each side of the engine block to use as alignment dowels for the bellhousing.

That has always worked for me.

And unfortunately, my experience with machine shop work has been about 50/50 with whether they made things better or worse.

I understand that its sometimes a crap-shoot until you find a decent machine shop. I need a bit more setup, then I only have myself to blame. I have a large surfacer with a Blanchard attachment.
