Roll Cage With A Pillars Going Through Dash

I'm starting to think about the rollcage design for my CJ5,

Most CJ cages have the A pillar bend and go straight down to the floor/frame infront of the dash, or sometimes bending around the dash for more leg room. Seems like it would be easy to just keep the A pillar continuing the angle of the windshield straight through the dash and then going all the way to the floor/frame. Or bending straight down to the floor at some point after going through the dash and then down to the frame. Both would give good foot room, and probably look cleaner.

Anyone done this? I'd have to cut the dash, but I'm fine with that, nothing on the jeep is in real good shape, it's pretty beat up and I'm not concerned with keeping it original.

 

I have built a cage for my YJ that I mounted to the dash corners. I did test the design, not planned, 5 times over the side, down hill, with a twist. If you'd like I have pic's of the build. Ron

 

like a plate on the dash? I'd rather just continue the tube down to the floor/frame. The body of my jeep is pretty beat up, I don't want to use it as apart of the cage. I will be bolting the body to the cage in serveral places, but would rather have the cage stand on it's own

 

Ok, this is what I did anyway.

 

There are a few builds here that have the cage in the dash. Biggest take-aways I had was the amount of added complexity and work to do. Then once it's done there is no more taking the dash loose for wiring.

I was thinking not to just cut a hole in the dash, but to cut a hole and split it above and below the hole and re-attach with a weld-nut on a small plate to connect the two together. Like that on both sides, so the dash would technically be 3 pieces at that point. I think there would be several ways of doing it, but that might be the easiest.

I have no idea if this is good, bad or indifferent. This is how the Yellowjacket came to me. The PO says it is plated on both sides of the dash. No down tubes.

 

If the body on your jeep is as rough as you say it is, then you definitely want to tie the cage into your dash...... that is the stoutest part of the whole jeep body.
Here is what I have built into the two jeeps that I have built. This design has been road tested in a 55 mph roll and held up well.
The first picture shows how the front hoop is bent and follows the shape of the dash/windshield frame. This style does not impede entry or exit from the jeep for people 6' and 230lbs.








Here you can see that the cage is tied into the dash, floor and jeep frame.

 

that's what I'm thinking about for the lower part of the A pillar, going to the floor at an angle and keep going down to the frame.

 

I used some railing elbows and sandwiched the roll cage with bolts threaded into a piece of angle iron for back up support. You can see the 5 3/8" bolts I used.

 

Here's what I did... There's a 2x2 1/4in wall tube that is standing in a channel in the body. It all bolts together through the dash. It stinks for not being able pull the dash quickly, but that hasn't been a problem yet. The biggest plus is swinging my size 11 feet in and out. I'd say it's worth it

I really like this method. Looks substantial and neat/clean at the same time.
