It makes me sad that all the "environmentalists" aren't up in arms about the salt runoff and it's negative affects, or the constant waste of resources to repair infrastructure damaged by salt application.

Spent a good hour scrubbing winch parts. They should be clean enough to reassemble now:

With the 4sp and overdrive finally in the '71 it's time to get this winch back together before I lose parts or forget how to put it back together:

Getting the rotor past the brushes was hard with only two hands:

Other than that, the rest of it went together pretty easily. New seals, bushings, and a fully rebuilt brake. I still need to add oil and bolt the two halves together:

I'm intentionally keeping the patina look to match the Jeep. I discovered the tab is missing off the pawl spring. New one ordered. $35.00 for a simple spring!

Next task is diving into the relay box.

Yes Sir. Spring making is a lost Trade. Fortunately , I was instructed on this along time ago. A lot of times, one can use the shop tools that they have already. I don't have all the jigs though they are still obtainable....inexpensive too. :flag:

Winch is back together with oil:

Tested all the soleniods and they seem to be working. In the process of cleaning them up now.

Well, I haven't done anything with this Jeep since April except use it. I love this thing:

But I need to get the shop cleaned up for September when we have someone putting in a ceiling and blow in insulation (We'll do the walls ourselves). Part of the cleanup is getting the Warn winch off the bench. If I'm doing that, I might as well put it on the Jeep. To do that I need to straighten this wonky front bumper:

I'ts about 3/4" pushed in between the frame horns. This doesn't let the Warn winch plate drop in behind it. I didn't want to use heat because I'm fond of the patina. It was time to get creative. First with a hydraulic jack to the radiator crossframe:

And then with a come-a-long to the tractor and some pounding with the BIG dead plow hammer:

After another round with the bottle jack and more pounding, it's less than 1/8" out. Good enough for this Jeep:

I figured while I was at it, I should make the bent-back/twisted driver's end of the bumper look better too:

More pulling just from the top:

I got it about 3/4 of the way fixed but left some twist for character.

All in all, the bumper looks 100 times better while keeping the patina. I'm very happy with the result:

Most importantly, the winch fits behind the bumper and clears the grill (barely):

I need to fab some end brackets, a controller mount, make some wires, and bolt the thing on.

See further up the thread for the winch rebuild.

Because nothing is allowed to be easy the control pack that came with the winch isn't set up to mount on the motor. It just had two mounting screws out the back:

Being to cheap to buy a new control pack, it's time to make a mount from some scrap. First cutting up a piece of 1.5x1.5 tubing:

    That will work:

    Cuttiing some 3/4" wide strips:

    Bending them to match:

Welded up. Hose clamps will go over the strap areas:

Now I need to do some cleanup grinding and drill some holes but that's a project for another night:

After some cleanup grinding and hole drilling on the bracket:

It test fits well, so time for some paint:

I did have to add some notches to clear the soleniod screws. I knew they would be close:

    Solenoids reinstalled:

Since the solenoid box was a remote mount the wires were too long. I marked where I wanted to cut them:

Then I got to play with a new toy. A hydraulic wire crimper:

    Strip the wire:

Clock the connector where you want it and squeeze. Makes a nice connection:

One advantage to this crimper over the hammer type is the ability to crimp in place. It worked great for this task.:

    Much better:

Since my bracket is painted and so is the motor housing, I thought it wise to add a ground for the solenoid pack:

Then it was time for a test! I've had this winch since 1998. The brake was rusted solid and it was partially disassembled then. I'm guessing it hasn't ran in 30 years:

Whoohoo, it works! :bananatool: That makes me happy.

To finish the evening, I trimmed the excess off the hose clamps:

And mounted them with the screws hidden behind the control box:

Now I need to work on attaching it to the Jeep.

I have redone a lot a 2/0 wire with connector last year while doing my ls swap. I did use welding slug. I wasnt sure at first but after i could say i will never do another method again.

You put the welding slug inside connector, you spray liquid flux over the wire. You torche heat the connector until the slug melted and you put the wire into it and wait 10-15 second for the weld to cool down.

I have try to pull off the cable from the connector after and i was rock solid.

I'm not going to get the winch mounted for a while because we're starting to insulate the shop but I did get the Kelly hardtops for the '68 and '69 stacked away in the barn for the summer:

If you don't mind my asking an off topic question, what type insulation will you be using in your shop?
