I ran in to the dreaded broken bolt while removing my thermostat housing. About 1/4 inch is sticking above the top of the engine. Tried an extractor set but no luck. I have an external extractor that clamps to the outside of the bolt in a counterclockwise rotation and bites down. Would work great with a high impact torque wrench (hopefully) but I can't get it to fit in the space. The oil fill pipe that sticks up from the engine next to the thermostat housing is in the way. Does anybody know if this is a screwed on pipe or something that is affixed by some type of adhesive? Not trying to add insult to injury by messing that up too. Thanks in advance!!

The oil fill extension is an interference fit. It may have some sealant helping to hold it in. There may be a very slight taper as it bottoms out. I can usually wriggle them out by hand.
The bolt you have broken off will need more than an external extractor. I wouldn’t try any kind of impact on it. Do you have an original iron manifold, or an aftermarket aluminum one?
I would be heating the broken bolt with a torch, then melt some paraffin candle wax on it, then grip with a vise-grip pliers to hopefully twist it out.

If you have access to a welder, drop a washer or nut onto the stub and weld it solid. they you can turn the the broken bolt out gripping the washer/nut

Another option I have used is to drill a hole through a piece of 1/2" steel the same size as the bolt. Slide it over the broken bolt and start drilling with a full size drill. Once you have a good center located at the surface of the intake. Use the proper drill to drill out the core of the bolt. Remove the threads with a pick. It worked well for me.
