Has anyone thought of switching the rear gas tank around so the fill was on the drivers side. I’m adding one to my 63 CJ5 and was thinking of putting in with the fill on the drivers side, if it would work.

Usually the fill is on the opposite side to the exhaust. The usual CJ donors put the exhaust out the left rear corner, so the fill is on the right.

I think the preference for the passenger side is more about cost than any appeal to function. The tanks that are available normally fill on that side, and you'd need something custom to move it to the other side. Question - why would you prefer one side over the other?

Look at Boyink's conversion shown at the link here here - http://earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/132870/page-2#post-1434349

I used the intermediate passenger rear panel filler location as a model for mine - just above the passenger rear tail light....its on the rear panel, so even though its on the passenger side, its quite easy to fill both the rear tank and the driver side underseat tank at the same pump if you pull in just a bit tight to the pump and a hair forward.

If I had a new tank, I can solder fairly well, and I might consider moving the filler neck. You might need an air-acetylene torch, like plumbers use. A MAPP gas torch might be enough heat.
