F134 Or Dauntless V6

    Because it's easier. No need to shift to first if you are rolling. This was in a hard top CJ-6 with a 258, T-14, and 3.73s. Around town you can shift at about 15 or 20 mph and continue in third to highway speed.

    All was well except on long highway uphill stretches at moderate speeds. Then, 2nd was too slow and 3rd did not have enough power. If this were 4.27s or I could keep the speed higher, it would have been ok. Daily driving in the city it was fine.

    It all depends on the condition and how it is set up. My 3B is still 80" wheelbase and goes down the road at 75 with ease. On a couple of occasions, in a much younger life, it went considerably faster than 75. Pretty much all the wheeling areas around here require some highway miles to access. I've never put a Jeep on a trailer so mine have to be reasonably competent both on and off road.

    My current Jeep is a 71 and has factory V6, 3 speed (T-14?), 4.88 gears and OD. I love the combination. Driving in the city, not freeway, without the OD engaged it is like a 2 speed. The torque will pull from a rolling start.

    My first Jeep was a CJ5 with the F head, 5.38 gears with OD and limited slip in the rear. This was 1975 and at 19 years old it just wasn't quick enough for me (I was young and dumb). I got a junk yard 231 odd fire and an adapter and stuffed it in. At the time you could buy factory motor mounts at the Jeep dealership. The V6 with the 5.38 gears would climb any hills I pointed it at. Off road great combo, on road it was ok but wound out on the freeways.

    For years I had an MB with the F head and 4.88 gears. I never even tried to take it on the freeway unless it was towed.

    When I found a good unmolested V6 CJ5 I sold the MB and bought it. If I was looking for a second CJ5 I would look at an intermediate (72 to 75 will avoid smog requirements) this gives you the upgraded brakes and steering while retaining the narrow track.

    F head 4 or V6? The V6 is more fun!

    A '71 came with a T-14. Note that owners have broken the T-14 running behind the 225. No burnouts allowed, no power shifting, no hammering 1st-reverse if stuck in snow or mud. Avoid similar abuse.

    All this talk about engines, gearing, tires, overdrives, etc. is all good. Most of us here either have or wish we had an all around old Jeep for town, highway and off road driving.

    But I’ll say again for the sake of the OP, a good trailer opens up a whole world of possibilities.

    For example, I doubt there would be many old Jeeps at the Colorado Fall Color Tour, the Winter 4x4 Jamboree in Sand Hollow, the Go Devil Run in Arizona or the Friday Flat Fender Fun Run during Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, just to name a few, if it wasn’t for trailers.

    I was in Moab this year during EJS for the FFFFR, didn’t bring a Jeep, just a spectator, but seeing all those flat fenders in one place was awesome. I’ll be there next year, with a Jeep. It’ll get there on a trailer.

    And you don't need to travel far. The parking lots of the trail heads of excellent off road areas around the country are full of trailers.

    So, yes, by all means, go ahead and build your old Jeep the way you want it, then buy a good trailer and really enjoy it.

    None of my plated/driven Jeeps have ever been on a trailer and never will be while I own them-barring a catastrophic melt down someplace. I look at that as part of the challenge of building one. Both my 3B and CJ 5 have covered a big chunk of the west under their own power. If I ever hit the FCT, it will be driving the Willys all the way. It made the MT/CO trip many times in the past.

    When I go camping with my local Jeep group, we all drive our Jeeps and pull the Bantams behind us.
    I have driven my Jeep to Colorado and back, with both the F4 and V6. I was younger then.
    Longer trips nowadays, like Colorado, the wife and I enjoy the modern comforts of the F150 cab with Jeep in tow.
    With that being said, I wouldn't hesitate to fill it up and drive anywhere with it on the highway.

    If you look real close, the right fender of the Bantam is visible behind my Jeep.
    This trip was to the Coyote Lake/Red Lake trail in central California near Shaver Lake outside of Fresno, CA. We drove 325 highway miles to get there, Jeeped on the trail into the lakes, then back out, and 325 miles back home. This was a 5-6 day trip.
    The maximum speed limit when towing is 55mph, but you go a little faster when you can. I can pull this trailer all day long at 65mph with no worries.

    That's quite an accomplishment. Lot's of planning, work and persistence.

    My comment was directed at the OP, a father with two young children who he hopes to include in his old Jeep activities. For him, a trailer is a much more practical way to get he, his family and their Jeep out of the city and into the back country.
