Is the vent for the rear end (Dana 44) that is on the tube sufficient or should I drill and tap (1/8") the pumpkin? I want to extend the vent higher with hose. Not planning any underwater travel but thought while it's on the bench why not, just for backing into a boat ramp type stuff. Thanks, Dave

I plugged the tube and drilled the cover on my '60. I'll run some hose up to a filter someday.

Using the stock vent is fine. All it does is relieve any pressure that builds up in the diff due to heat expansion/contraction.

Make sure you put a shield on the inside of the cover to deflect the gear oil from the vent tube. Otherwise it has a tendency to be pumped up the vent tube by the pump action of the ring gear teeth. Been there done that.
