Frame and body are really solid for a 1963. Has Tornado OHC, T98 4 speed, dual wheels on a 44 frt and I think a 70 rear. It hasn't run in about 15 years. My son's going to get it running, build a stake bed and get it road worthy, then slowly restore it. He really likes it.

    Nice!
I wish you were closer, I’d give you a set of those wheels.

I like this idea and there's a fair amount of those 10 lug Fords in the local wrecking yard. I don't want him messing around with split ring wheels.

That rim swap is a great idea! as most tire companies here in the southeast will not mount split rims anymore.(SAFETY ISSUE) Just something to consider.

    Love the truck

Guy I know a couple years ago was taking a split ring rim apart and it went sideways enough to give him brain damage. I broke those tires apart when I was a kid, but I would not do it now.

When I was a kid, we did split rims in my dad's shop. Till one day that one came apart...no one got hurt, but scared the bejesus out of everyone! No more split rims!

I was working at a shop installing dump bodies around 1998. They also had excavating equipment and a rental business. They had their small engine repair guy trying to put tires on a split ring wheel. He was leaning on the edge of the tire, airing it up on the ground. I went to yell for him to get off the tire when the ring blew off and threw him over the cab and onto the other side of the truck. I yelled "call 911" and ran over. He was just laying there quivering. Not breathing. His face was so messed up, we weren't able to give CPR. The ambulance came really quickly though. They were able to get him breathing on the ride in. He lived but is brain damaged. My dad wouldn't even let me put air in a split ring wheel. I thought it was him being over cautious until I saw that.

They didn't have a cage or even tell the guy to chain around the ring and tire. He didn't know any better. I wish I saw it sooner. Maybe I could have saved him a lifetime of hurt.

Since the front is a 44, it should be relatively easy to find 8-lug hubs to swap in, and 1-ton dually rears are a dime a dozen. Might be easier than doing the rim swap, unless the gearing is odd.

Since my ford is 2wd, I’m sorta stuck with the beam axle and 6 lugs up front until I find a replacement beam out of a bread truck or something. I swapped in an 8-lug rear out of a Winnebago, so my F&R (bolt pattern) don’t match.

The 70s in these trucks are 4.88s or 5.87s.

230 trucks are really cool, but you have to be the right owner. Dually J-trucks are particularly scarce. I would consider all 230-equipped as collector cars today. There are a few owners on the Wagoneer forums that advise on the 230, or maybe try the M715 forum.

I owned one a long time ago and it was a good engine to me. It seemed powerful but the truck disintegrated around it. That one was a half ton. My son is a slow driver. Not prone to crazy revving. I suspect he will be ok. My other boys and my little girl would not be as kind. They are brutal.

He wants to restore it he said. I suspect that means we will grab some of those 10 lug wheels and turn them into 6 luggers. My friend is a machinist on the side and he sees no issue with making the holes match. Maybe he can make the wheels hub centric for the rear. We will see.

Even in the day, the 230 had a bad reputation. Probably worse than it deserved. I don't know much about them, just what I heard around the Jeep dealer and online. Might be worthwhile to ask on the forums about what's needed to keep them running. Parts are scarce, I recall ... try Kanter.

I drove a '68 350 dually truck at the dealership quite a lot. It was a good truck; drove it to and back from the car auctions with a beach Jeep on the flatbed and two on the trailer. Handled that just fine. Drove it around on the streets on various errands ... mostly when no other vehicles were available. Backed the trailer over a sprinkler pipe, specifically when I was warned not to hit the sprinkler pipe. That did not burnish my reputation.

The timing chain and tensioner used to be the hard thing to find. Now they appear cheap and easy to get. I already ordered one just to have around. Apparently they became some kind of hot rod engine in Argentina. Maybe that's why parts are again available. I really don't know. They are interesting.

If he's going to pull some huge load, he can use the F600. If I ever get moving on it. Lol

Looks like it will get wheels sooner rather than later. One wheel rotted in half from sitting in the mud. Also it has the 4.88 gears, so that's a plus. I suspect CJ may have the plow and frame removed before he goes to work tomorrow.

The early 230 engines leaked a lot of oil from the front timing cover area. They used an engine mount plate that sandwiched with the timing cover. The bolts always loosened up making things leak a lot.
The M715 solved this issue by casting lugs in the block for more conventional bolt-on side engine mounts.

CJ put a new Holley carb on it, new points and condenser along with plugs, wires, cap and rotor. It idles like a sewing machine now. It really appreciated the love.
