I brought the 3b back to my place to take some measurements. After some thought I decided I'll try to make another frame. Hopefully I can find what I need at a scrap yard and this should work out to be a disaster.

I replaced my HEI rotor...normally this wouldn't be news, BUT I had just run 3 solid days at the Winter 4x4 Jamboree in southern UT without any trouble. I drove the Jeep onto the trailer with no issue. When it came time to unload after getting home, the Jeep wouldn't start. I could tell it was not getting spark so dove into the dizzy cap. Here's photo of the old rotor and the new one waiting on my garage shelf. I replaced the cap as it had some stray carbon deposits also.
HEI is GREAT...until a component starts to fail and the thing almost self-destructs. I have a couple DELCO replacements ordered.

Why do they look different ? Does that effect the timing ?

I went out the morning after driving home from the Rubicon and the jeep wouldn't start. Out of gas, guess I planned my fuel pretty tight. Congratulations, you have trained your jeep to die in the driveway (after a long trip). Hard to do.

It's very important to use quality rotors on the HEI.

One of the few times (young and dumber than most) I actually drove the 3b to the race (2 1/2 hours), raced it (won my class :bananatool:), then expected to drive it home….

After the race, I had my stuff loaded up and was ready to head home, and it wouldn’t start. I popped the distributor cap to find a huge internal crack from the rotor post, and down to and between two wire posts. I asked around the campground, and obviously nobody else was silly enough to race an Fhead, so no spares to be found. I hoofed it down to the junkyard about a mile away where there were a few old flatties, but none had the same distributor as mine, and they were locked solid, so no chance of swapping the whole unit.

When I got back to the campground, I borrowed a propane torch and used a red-hot screwdriver tip to melt the crack shut and smooth it over. It fired up, I drove straight home without issue, but when I tried to start it again 10 minutes later to pull it in the garage, nothing, not even a pop.

Now, that's ingenuity. Can't make up stuff like that.

    Cool story.

    Holley Sniper install.
Got a couple issues straight and it started right up!!

    1. Had wrong circuit and Power to distributor was not on when cranking.
    2 distributor was 180* out.

The neighbors would think it’s late to do 20min cam break in so just a short test.

With your backfire, I thought your distributor might be out 180. Happens a lot. I'm really glad you got her going. Good Job.

    Are you serious?
HEI can develop over 60K volts. If any component can't transfer this voltage, something's gotta give! Carbon trails in the cap or carbon deposits on the rotor (as pictured) will develop. Cheap parts will fail quickly; even quality components can fail if there's a weak link in the chain. A conversion to HEI requires care and quality components. I thought I had succeeded by using genuine DELCO parts, but obviously something still failed.
In addition to changing the cap & rotor, I will change the plugs and wires even though I have less than 10K miles on same.
I learned a LONG time ago that HEI is great, but EVERYTHING must be in tip-top condition.
My high school '76 Olds Omega had a small V8. While not an overly powerful car, it had a miss on one cylinder causing the HEI to go south. The miss was hard to detect, but after a thorough investigation of plugs and wires, it was apparent that one cylinder wasn't firing right. A carbon trail was created in the dizzy cap and wreaked havoc until the bad plug wire was replaced.

There was supposed to be a trail ride this weekend but it rained so that was canceled. Instead, I gave the 3b a bath and went for a drive. It's 37* out so I got some weird looks.

I let a friend borrow the 3b for a couple weeks so he could use it around his property and he managed to pick this up somewhere.
....and now he also wants a flat fender to use around his property.

Serious as a Heart Attack. In your pic it shows one contact to the left & the other to the right ? With the screw mounts the same , that would affect timing. I'm just wonder'n why they're a different configuration ?

It won't effect timing, that's controlled by the pickup and the module. The offset contacts would only effect the length of the first gap the spark needs to jump inside the distributor (the second gap being the spark plug).

...and I suspect the parts are the same anyway. It looks like an optical illusion caused by the wide-angle camera being close to the parts and the contacts being closer to the camera than the bases are.

This is a correct interpretation of the photo. Both parts are identical (minus the wear and damage to the first one). There is some distortion in the photo since the camera was close to the parts.
Thanks to Fireball for clarifying the confusion.

The cam brake in didn’t go so well.

I’m going to start taking it apart as soon as It cools off. Looks like rear main seal as the sides of the engine are pretty clean but running out of the bellhousing.

this 231 was unknown condition I bought for $100 out of the dirt in some guys front yard.

Yes Sir.......That's what it is. 231's like to leak there , especially if it's pan has been sitt'n in the dirt . I think I can send you a ' once & done ' procedure , if you'd like ?
