Use a piece of rope and measure it. Easy. Any parts person that's not completely clueless can sell you a belt by length.

The Gates 7500 is the absolute shortest belt you can run on a 225 with factory high mount.
If I recall you can go longer up to around 2-1/2” more inches. Perhaps as long as the 7525.
    See: https://www.gates.com/us/en/power-transmission/v-belts/automotive-v-belts.html
I’m running the 7500 on mine with standard diameter pulleys.
A half inch wide tape measure gives very near the exact OAL as compared to the Gates chart.

Got a Gates 7500, and it's the perfect length.
    But, my PS doesn't work!
The pump is spinning and it's full of fluid but there's no power assist :banghead:
I thought this was going to be a quick and easy project but it's been nothing but problems...

I jacked up the front and turned the steering lock to lock with the engine running probably a dozen times.

You actually want to do it without engine running. I did it at least 30 times on mine until air stopped burping out of the reservoir. Then run it for 2 seconds, repeat lock to lock until no new air.

Been there. You are forcing the gearbox to act as pump to get the air out. Also, helps to disconnect your drag link to get full lock to lock travel on the gearbox. Mine is about 4 turns disconnected and 2 when connected.

    I
Instructions from West Texas Off Road, (vendor for Saginaw boxes and ram assists): Cycle the gear back and forth without engine running until air stops burping out of the reservoir. Frequently check level, and top off. Once it has stopped burping, run the engine very briefly, top off again, and cycle again until it burps no more and stops taking more fluid. repeat as necessary. Worked great for me without foaming the fluid.

Did the belt come off or get burned ? It may be the pump seized and sheared the shaft and isn't pumping . Did you just replace the pump or install it. Was this a sudden thing that just happened?

I just installed the PS setup. Pump isn't seized. Pump & gearbox are both used parts of unknown history.

Ok just trying to get an idea of what you got going. It is more than likely air in the system try bleeding it like Tim said also some gearboxes have a bleeder screw on them it looks like a pipe plug where the hoses hook to it if equipped with on take it out and cycle the wheel till fluid runs out with engine off.

Success! Had to put a different PS pump on it, now it works good...maybe TOO good! The steering is very light and very quick, it's going to take some getting used to.

Me too. The Saginaw steering on the '71 is touchy. I haven't bothered to figure out the ratio but if a slower one is available I'll probbaly swap to it some day.

Mine is a tad touchy also. I attributed it to the longer pitman arm I am using(stock 72 manual arm) but maybe its just what everyone else is experiencing
