This afternoon I cleaned up the hubs that were on my jeep when I bought it. Turns out they are Dualmatic locking hubs. Thanks to some tips from the cj3a page, they're ready to go! They were covered with gunk and painted black. I cleaned them up and painted them with cobalt blue metallic paint. I'd love to find some labels for them eventually. (Edit...I found some at cruiser parts.net)

They look better than my wheels (and the rest of the jeep...)

I started playing today. Wife's due date was last Thursday so I'm keeping my mind busy. Could be a dad any day now...

Today I painted the steps, sanded and painted the windshield frame, and worked on getting the transmission tunnel in place. I'm going to have to make a box to cover the distributor that sits in the firewall. I also sanded and painted the old tail lights. I believe they are original...and not too bad to be 47 years old. I also had a little fun and put the windshield on and roughly bolted in the seats.

One other thing I'm working on is getting the rear mount tire carrier installed. I need different brackets for the hinge side...the ones I have are too short. At least I'm this far along...

Yep, original lights. Very nice, I love how your dualmatic hubs came out, look way cooler than Warn hubs.

Got a couple hours of play time in today. Life with a newborn is busy! I revisited my radiator mounting and did a little cutting on the old grill in order to get things to fit. I found a fan and shroud that just barely fits...but I think it will all work.

I also cut down one wiper shaft and got it mounted and installed the battery tray. Small progress...one day at a time.

This week I hopefully will get the body media blasted, primed, painted, and back on. In the mean time, I filled up the transmission and transfer case with oil. That oil has ended up back on my garage floor...right through the front and rear seal. When I rebuilt the transfer case, I didn't pay much attention to the yokes, even though I did everything else according to the many Dana 18 threads on here. Rtv on splines, around the seal, etc... I pulled the yokes yesterday and they are pitted and grooved - front and back. Should have noticed that. I ordered a sleeve to cover both. We'll see how that works...

This week is the blitz. Wife and baby are out of town...so maybe I can wrap up this 2 1/2 year project. Paint and wiring should just about do it. Doing it in Spruce tip green. Stay tuned!

It occurred to me the other day that my quick winter project that I started in Feb of 2012 was getting close to a 3 year project, and decided that was unacceptable. I've been on a working blitz and scrapped some of my previous plans. The body work was just going to be too much, so I patched what I could, hit it with primer, and then some Massey-Ferguson gray tractor paint. It's more of a greenish brown, which I actually really like. I started wiring it up with the ez-wiring harness I had, and have been finishing up the loose ends. I started it with an actual key yesterday for the first time since Feb 17, 2012. Woohoo!

My checklist of things left to do:
+ Install back-up lights and switch
+ Take to a shop and get tail pipe routed from the muffler out the back
    + install rear view mirrors
+ finish up the wiring (brake lights, wipers)
+ hook up the temp/volt/oil pressure gauge
    + mount side steps
    + install new Summit heater
    + buy Bestop Supertop
+ find a snap ring for front running light lens
    + DRIVE

I think I learned my first curse words with those hubs. Watched my Uncle fight with them on his Jeep many moons ago in the frozen snow out in the fields.

    "*@%#! Hubs MO!^@#@ FRI@^%#..... OOOWWW!!! Mot%^& Fa!*&%)*#!!!!!"
Didn't help he bashed em up against rocks all the time.

Hahaha... Yeah those hubs can be a pain. I keep a flat head handy to pull those levers out. This morning before work I filled the transmission, t-case and differentials with oil. Then I got a wild hair and fired it up and drove it up the street and back. Still have work to do...but dang it feels good to be able to drive it again. Brakes lights are up and running, and I installed some lights in the foot area with the dome light wire from my ez-wiring harness. I also had to install a diode in alternator exciter wire. I started yesterday and couldn't turn it off! I turned the key...still on. Unplugged the battery...still running. Finally I unplugged the power to the hei and it shut down. Fun stuff.

On a side note... It appears that my leak repair job on the tcase is actually working. Finally. Maybe this jeep will finally stop marking its territory!

Well, here we go. My birthday present from my wife arrived Thursday... a Supertop! Ok..so I ordered it myself but she "allowed" me to get it for my birthday. Still pretty great. I installed it yesterday. Today I installed the heater and glove box. Also put in a new temp gauge since mine died. Then I took it on its maiden voyage to the gas station. I still have some issues it seems. I thought I got everything plugged, but now the T90 is leaking from the front (seriously????) and the fuel sending unit seal on the gas tank blew out when I filled up. Looks like I'm going to have to drop both to fix them. Sigh. But, it does run great! I think it's time for a profile pic change too....

Well…here we are a decade later from when this all began and I’m back to work. Kids are almost 8 and 5 now, and my son loves the Jeep. After all my hard work, it ended up sitting for years in the driveway with only the occasional drive, so a lot of the seals dried out and leaks are back. Someone hit my daily driver, and so I'm fixing the Jeep to use in the mean time. I started with some brake repair. The cylinder was frozen, and the boots were shot. Luckily I had one in my junk box and was able to swap it out.

I think my rear main is leaking, along with the usual Dana 18 leaks, so I started working on things with my son. He did a good job helping remove the drive shaft, and learned how to hand me a 9/16, 5/8 and 1/2 wrench.

    IMG_5973.jpg
We pulled the the transmission and transfer case tonight and I’ve got it on the work bench to rebuild. I want to completely reseal everything, check the intermediate shaft, the output shaft endplay, and swap the syncro rings/dogs. It always pops out if gear when coasting in 2nd.

    IMG_5971.JPG
I also decided to stop fighting with the old duomatic hubs and get something easier.

    IMG_5881.JPG

I may post these for sale..

    We’ll see what happens.

Thanks....didn't realize I could drag and drop photos. The last time I uploaded them, they had to be externally hosted and I was using my google photo account. Should be up now!

Looks like a good time! I've got a 7 and 5yr old. Get them some youth safety glasses and ear muffs. Good thick hats to protect their heads when they sit up into things.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your build thread, brought back a lot of memories on some of my old builds. I remember when my oldest son was just over 1 year old and was sitting on the floor of my garage playing with bolts and nuts while I worked on my 42 flat fender trying to install a 283 in my first jeep without books, friends with knowledge or the internet. My oldest son is 40 now, and he still loves working on jeeps, with his being a 2007 JK that we swapped in a Hemi v8, automatic and lots of other mods.

Hope you have these same kind of memories in store for you in the years to come...
