1958 Willys Cj5 Front Pto Shaft Constantly Spins

    I have a 1958 CJ5 with a Ramsey winch that I just completed a major overhaul(not the winch) on to get it driveable. But I've discovered that the front PTO shaft is constantly spinning even when the PTO transfer case appears to be disengaged. I can't tell if the PTO transfer case is completely disengaged because my setup does not have a shift lever down to the pto transfer case but rather it is cable actuated with a red knob pull at the dash extending to the transfer case. I've gone under the vehicle and made sure the lever is in what should be the disengaged position but the pto shaft spins up in 2-wheel drive and sounds like it is going to create some serious damage over 5-10 mph. It doesn't seem to happen in 4-wheel drive or at least i don't notice it because of the low speed. I don't know if I'm not going through the correct sequence to disengage the pto? I have three shift levers on the floor; transmission, front axle drive and aux range(high & low). Is their a proper sequence to disengage? Or can i remove the PTO drive shaft, PTO transfer case, take out the internals and put the cover back on so it is driveable?

    Pull the PTO & verify the amount of lever movement available actually retracts the dog clutch, & if that's all the way back as far as it can go. I'd dig out a tape measure & make a drawing showing how far inside the case the cogs on the output gear are, how far the PTO projects into the case & the range of movement of the clutch.

    What model PTO is it?

    Is that for a Dana 20? If so ignore everything I said, I was thinking you had a unit that fits on a D18; whole different beast altogether. :(

    Disconnect cable at pto and manually operate the pto and make sure can feel it positively “click” into both positions. Also check the cable for binding with it disconnected.

    The Ramsey STC-5 is intended to be used on a D20 transfer case that was used on Jeepsters and '72-up CJs. These mount in place of the bottom "oil pan". I'm not sure what the "W" designates as I have never seen that particulat version.
    Does your '58 Jeep still have the original D18 transfer case where both axle driveshafts are offset to the right side?
    Typically, the PTO units for a D18 attach to the back of the transfer case where the round 5 -bolt cover plate is.
    You should be able to simply unbolt your PTO and replace it with an original tin oil pan so you can drive your Jeep.

    Yes it is a Dana 18 with the axle driveshafts offset to the right. And yes the PTO unit is attached to the back of the transfer case. I've ordered the 5-bolt cover plate and hopefully i can get PTO unit off without pulling the transmission. Unfortunately we had the entire transmission out including the PTO when we replaced the clutch and flywheel, but didn't know i had the issue with the PTO at the time. Here is a photo of the pto and back of transfer case.

    Ive done more research on the STC-5 and Donny you are right it should be for a Jeepster Commando and cable actuated. Not sure how the original owner got this to work properly and well obviously it is really isn't. I've disconnected the cable as it was not moving in or out properly. Is it possible that I should have the lever from the transfer case pushed all the way forward to disengage? Pulling the cable would from the dash/knob, if it worked, moves the lever forward on the pto drive(see photo in previous post), and i assumed that engaged the pto drive but maybe it is the opposite? Not sure how these things work internally. Thanks in advance

    It looks in the picture the pto is bolted to the bottom of the transfer case since it appears the rear cover is showing. The pic is a bit fuzzy when I blow it up though so hard to tell. In the picture was it still bolted up?
    A 20 pto can be made to work with an 18 transfer case but the transfer case must be a 29 tooth input unit and you must get the driven gear for the pto for one intended for an early Bronco “T” shift transfer case.

    It is attached to the bottom of the transfer case. I thought at first it was attached to the back, not knowing what i know now about a Dana Spicer 18.
