I took advantage of the weather and took my cj5 out for a ride today. Came to a really steep hill. Stopped at the top, geared down to 1st gear, and just idled down the hill. Just letting the engine do the breaking without touching the brakes in 2 wheel drive.

When I got to around 10 mph , I started hearing an intermittent “chirping” sound from what sounded like the passenger side. I slowed down, the noise went away. Continued down the hill. When I reached around 10 mph again, the chirping started back.
The road was not rough so I know it’s not a random “squeak”.

Jeep is mostly stock running Dauntless V6, T-14a, Dana 18.

any thoughts as to what the noise might be?

I was hearing it even though I wasn’t using the brakes.

Yeah, but maybe a loose part or shoe dragging? Would it stop if you touched the brake pedal?

Ah. Good question. I didn’t try that.

I’ll take it back out there and try it to see.

    thanks for the suggestion.

If you have a tapered rear axle might also check the axle flange nut. I’ve run into one that was loose allowing the flange to move around slightly causing a squeak.

I’m afraid I’m a novice on all this. I’m not sure if I have a tapered rear axle or not. However, I’m willing to roll up my sleeves and get schooled. :schooled:

sorry for my lack of knowledge

thanks for all the suggestions. I’ll start working through them as best I can

From the pictures in your posting: 1970 Cj5 “re-furbish” Advice, you have a flanged axle not a tapered axle. A tapered axle will have a dust cap on it while a flanged axle is flat (with some indents).

So that's one less thing to look into.
