I beat up a couple pairs of shocks. I’ve cut the upper mounts off and repositioned to get a better angle and switched to Blistine shocks which are made to install “tube up”. So far it’s working well.

I never knew there was a correct way to mount shocks. I have rancho 5000 on my cj and they’re mounted large tube on top due to a lack of clearance between the large tube and tie rod on the passenger side. Will this cause problems?

Check with the manufacturer. Some will be damaged (beyond useful) by installing upside down. AMHIK

I don't know if this link works, but this is what I had to end up doing after trying other things. http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/143020/page-2

I tried inverting the shocks but the same thing happened when I was at full stuff and turning; although I did the tie rod flip which raised them and some of my interference was tie rods. Watch out on the rear shocks that came with the kit, they seem to bottom out and break/loosen and the mounting bolt falls out. I had that happen a few times like others with the kit.

If the shocks bottom out, that's kind-of your fault for fitting a too-long shock. You need to measure the distance between the pins at full compression and compare to the compressed length of the shock. If the shock is too long, extend the bump stops so that the shocks never reach full compression. Realize that the bump stop rubber will compress some when the axle comes up, so include that in your measurement.

Or, you can extend the shock mounts to allow for more suspension travel. See Buildflycrash's pic above. You still need to measure and be sure that the shocks will not fully compress.

Don't know if this lift maker includes this information in their instructions. I know that BDS does.

well yes...but I think several of us on here have been surprised by the same thing on this kit since the brand shocks Eddy Arnold mentioned came with the kit, just like mine, so I felt inclined to pass on the warning.

Not meant to scold. The kit supplier should have pointed this out, if they did not.

Rocky Road supplies the shocks with their kit. The rears are too long. They know the rears are too long, I supplied them pics and p/n at one point. Steve bottomed his out and bent the shafts on his first trip out…..
But Rickety Road knows knows everything……

I didn’t even know that but flexed mine, measured and bought shocks that fit the first time.

Hmmmm, I didn't think about the shocks being to long. I just put a 2.5" procomp lift kit on my 68. I will measure the fully compressed spring pin to pin and compare it to the compressed shock. Thanks for the info!

Also on the same notion, when placing the upper mount don't forget to take into consideration that the tire will tip inward when compressed and the other side is extended. Tire sidewalls do not mix well with bolt heads.
