Recently towing with the windshield down and strapped, I noticed paint rub marks on the hood where the 2 standoffs were. I know my paint is not the newest and got some crystallizing going on, but if I paint in the future and/or next towing, what can be done to help this. The canvas strips are in good condition and soft.

I have thought about mounting the "standoffs" on the hood, like they did on earlier Jeeps. My windshield is black and rubs there would be easier to touch up.

My parents were antique dealers. It is the authentic wear-and-tear of actual use that gives classic things their value.

After getting my Jeep painted several years ago, to better protect the new paint on the hood, I bought some D-shape solid rubber adhesive weatherstripping (which Amazon used to sell in shorter lengths, but the same profile may be available elsewhere):

    https://www.amazon.com/SEALS-A094-4...J2DVA&qid=1637901136&s=merchant-items&sr=1-89

and used it to replace the original molded canvas welting on the metal hood standoffs. I riveted the ends of the rubber strips to the standoffs to somewhat resemble the originals, but for obvious reasons didn't install rivets in the center sections that ride on the hood.

I often drive with the windshield down, and this has worked well, though over time the rubber does leave a black mark which can be cleaned off. However, the newer single-stage gloss paint on my Jeep may make it easier to clean the rubber off than if it were on old paint.

Here are a few photos showing what I did:

I’m trying to keep Willie as original as possible. I considered adding a rubber stand-off block mounted to the hood like the newer jeeps but just hate to change the appearance. But terry cloth sound like something I need to try. Keep 2 cloths in the glove box and put them down first. Gonna try that next trip.
