    Hi
I'm going to tear into my 1979(?) D30 (2bolt caliper) front axle to replace the axle U-Joints. Thinking I should replace most/all the different seals in there along the way. Anyone have a good view with numbers or kit or list?
    Thanks

Inner axle carrier seal is Spicer 46470
Early design spindle seal CR 19992
Late design (bellows type) spindle seal Forsheda 38128.
Or buy it in a kit along with the small spindle bearing seal 8121399.
Late design axle spacer 83501113 (delrin washer) controls outward end float).
    Inner spindle bearing Torrington 2110.
Inner hub wheel bearing seal CR 21159 or National 8430 S.
Early wheel bearings are all Timken LM501349 cone LM501310 cup
Disk brakes use different inner hub bearing Timken LM102949

What designated early design vs late design?
Production year? Some mid year change?

I think it’s a ‘79. Has the brake caliper held on with 2 bolts others have 6.

I think the change to Forsheda bellows type seals possibly occurs in 1976 but definitely occurs by 1977 when disk brake spindles where used.
I’ll take some pics of the various parts to show the differences.
I have some extras so I will have many of these parts available. (various spindles, seals, bearings etc.)

I’ve not played with the 30 yet but have one here now that I’ll be going through for a project so this thread will help me too.

After thinking about for a bit I though maybe the change had to do with change in rotor thickness, which had forgotten about but I guess not. Anyway, carry on. I’ll be watching. Thanks.

First off pic shows 2 factory outer stub shafts.
The early ones up to about 1975 ? used a bronze thrust washer to control outward shaft end float.
Then they switched to what looks like a grey delrin plastic. [IMG]

Here we see the early inner seal next to the stub shaft. This type seal fits direct into the spindle.
As you can see it seals around the dust shield located on the stub shaft.

Here you see this early shaft to spindle seal compared to a similar looking hub (wheel bearing) seal.

This shows another brand of hub seal for use with early spindles.

Here we see the two distinctly different types of shaft to spindle seals. Standard lip seal vs.the bellows type seal. These keep contaminants out away from the inner spindle/shaft bearing.

This shows the Torrington spindle/shaft bearing and another seal that goes directly up against the caged neadles. These 2 parts are set into the spindle bore.

Here we see 2 spindles. Early to about 1975 or 1976 and a late spindle from 1977 on. Note the difference of the inner surfaces. [IMG]

Unlike the early lip seal the Forsheda seal “must” have a smooth flat surface to seal against.

And finally this pic shows an early spindle compared to a post 1976 disk brake spindle.
Note the machined steps on the later spindle.
This requires use of a different inner bearing cone having a larger I.D. bore. [IMG]

I should mention that the 2 different hub (wheel bearing) seals shown above will only fit over the early spindles.
The later stepped spindle seal has a larger I.D.
I’d have to look that up and I don’t collect the books after 1975.
I believe the hub itself remained the same but would also need to verify that as fact from a later book.
Anyone have access to a 76 or later parts catalog ?
