My CJ-5 is build on 09/1973 but ID number is starting with J4F835... Is it the 1974 Model?
I think the previous owner wiring everything by himself, because I have a fuseblock of 10 fuses in the row.
Now I have problems that my temperature and fuel gauge is not working. I do not know where to start. and the wiring behind the dash is a mess. dir someone have a harness routing diagram (and in addition an wiring diagram) Is it worth to replace the wiring by painless #10105 or is there a differnt one to use that is not so expensive or is it worth to invest the money? Thanks & best Hep

If the gauges were working before I don't think you need to rewire the jeep.
I know originally those gauges had a common power source, you may check the fuse. I thought there was something else common with those two as well but I can't remember what it is.
Hopefully someone else will be along to tell you what it is.

Yes, November 1973 is 4 months into the 1974 model year. Any J4 VIN is 1974 production.

No routing diagram for a '74 exists as such. The closest to a routing diagram is the pictures in the 1972 factory service manual. The '72 is close to the '73 or '74 with different heater controls and other details. You can buy the '72 TSM many places including RockAuto. More Information for DETROIT IRON DPRC10472JSM

You can figure it out. As a group, old Jeeps are electrically simple. Usually these rewires use "hot rod" harnesses that provide a fuse panel and lots of different colored wire, and not much more. If you can find out who made the wiring harness, there may be instructions online somewhere. Since the wiring has been modified from original, there will be no "official" diagram aside from whatever documents the previous owner kept. A '74 does not use a fuse panel. It only has a few inline fuses and a circuit breaker for the lights in the headlight switch.

Your choice - fix what you have (that's what I would do), put the wiring back to the factory condition using the factory wiring diagram, or buy a new hot rod harness and rewire using that. There are no complete reproduction harnesses available for 1974, so you would have to buy wire and connectors and make the original-style harness.

This topic has been covered thoroughly in earlier threads. Suggest you read old threads and learn more. site:earlycj5.com wiring harness - Search

Where to start - how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. I would get a big piece of paper and colored pencils and start at the fuse panel. Take one circuit, trace where it goes, draw it out. Compare to the factory diagram. The entire TSM for 1974, including the wiring diagrams, is available online, free to read and download. Since this is not the original wiring, it seems very unlikely that someone here can tell you step by step what to do about the gauges. Even with the factory wiring harness, it is seldom possible to diagnose and repair electrical problems without the Jeep in front of you. If you have the factory gauges, these are covered in the TSM. Look at figure 3-60. Suggest you understand how they are connected, look at the wiring you have, and figure it out.

    First post! Welcome from Boston.

Dear Tim, thank you for your reply. I check all fuses and clean them. Now it is working again. If I just once like to replace my harness which one you recommend. Best from Berlin / Germany

I bought my last one from Jeepster Man. Its going into my 68 CJ6 and I am impressed with the quality. They asked a ton of detailed questions about my 6 before they built the harness. I have to say, this is the first harness I've bought beside one from Hot Rod Harnesses out of Cali. But that one was just an engine CPU harness for a 4.3 going into a CJ2a. I knoiw a lot have used Painless harnesses in the past.
