Any of you install an engine block heater in your commando, specifically the :amc: AMC 304?

I will admit, I live in Houston, and it doesn't get cold enough to require a block heater, but boy do I love the heater in my Duramax on the chilly mornings.... :D

I figure if I'm draining the coolant to replace the intake manifold, I'll go ahead and install a block heater while I'm at it. Looks like the only location is the Driver's Side rear, as the engine mounts block the front freeze plugs, and the starter appears to conflict with the Passenger Side rear.

Any issues with the Zerostart brand block heater?

I'm planning to use some coolant safe sealant with the o-ring, and a little lock tight on the captured nut to keep it from backing out.

    Any learnings would be appreciated.

I had a lower hose heater on my 134 and 4.3 chevy. It is nice to not have to mess with the freeze plugs when they are sealed.

Our tractors in NY had the 1500w heaters in the heater hose but the tractor engine was a lot harder to heat up in the field.

Heater with internal Thermostat to shut off is a good thing to have so you don't waste energy.

Block heaters are meant for locales like Wisconsin or Alaska. I suggest an aftermarket remote start system. This will probably require fuel injection, which can start cold without any pedal action.

I don't see any reason a $50 block heater won't do what he wants It just won't take as long to get to 180deg.

Also note that block heaters used to only be options for new cars sold in the north but now I know ford made it an option for all states.

I routinely use my block heater in my Duramax in Houston during January/February for the comfort factor, and as I get older, that comfort factor gets more important. I'm going to break into the water jacket to install a new intake manifold and change out the thermostat, might as well install any additional kit while I've got it drained.
