Shock Mount

    Posted this in the wagon section as it for my 58, but guessing this applies to other early jeeps. Wondering about the shock mounts on the 58 wagon...well really, the shock retainer system which is just a thick washer and cotter pin on the end of the shock post....Has anyone ever had an issue with this set-up? My cj has the the threaded shock mounts that use a nut and seem a bit more secure. Guessing someone has tried threading the end of the post to use a nut like later set-ups? Any tricks with this people have figured out? Cutting and welding new threaded post is an option, but would test my welding a bit more than I might trust. As an alternative solution, just using a later spring plate (like on my cj5) would have the threaded shock mount on the bottom at least...thanks!
    My apologies if this has been covered before....I didn't take much time to search yet....if so, let me know, and I can dig around for it.

    I think you're creating a problem where one doesn't exist. Just go with the cotter pin.

    I agree colojeepguy. The cotter pin and washer shock retainer is what has been on my jeep ('45 GPW) for the past 76 years and works just fine.

    The top mount won’t see the twisting motion that the bottom will, so it would be rare to have an issue with a pinned top mount.

    All I can say is I have never had an issue with the old cotter pin and washer setup but I have had issues with the nut working loose on threaded pins, even when using lock type nuts.
    Although one would have more control of how tight the bushing could be squeezed with a nut and washer setup. It would seem a castle nut, cotter pin and washer setup might be best.

    I threaded the upper fronts on my 2A.
    No issues with that.

    I threaded all the original pins on my 3B. I never had an issue with those loosening up over decades of use. I did use thread locker with the nylock nuts and really beefy washers.
