Sounds like the 4spd sitting on my bench. I've told it repeatedly to install itself in the Jeep and it just sits there.

Why use a front axle to build a rear? I think this is a high pinon rear D60 for reasonable cost...

That would be a low pinion. Ford likes low in the back and high in the front. The axles are stonger that way.

I’m not concerned with strength as much as I am interested in the high pinion. That’s about 3” of driveshaft angle eliminated (or rather, I could stuff the t-case up 3” higher in the frame with the same driveshaft angle, and gain 3” of rock clearance under the vulnerable driveshaft) just by axle choice.

A reverse rotation axle up front is as strong as a standard rotation in the rear.

Placing a reverse rotation axle in the rear is something like 30% weaker than a standard rotation, so a HP D60 R&P would be marginally stronger than a 44, which is still plenty strong for what I have planned.

The hard part will be finding and building one in my budget. I’ll probably end up building this with a standard rear axle, then maybe building the axle I want down the road.

Just build the axle now and post the process. Its much more fun for us and maybe I can mail you random parts to weld on and free up some more space around here.. Like a whole jeep or somethin...

I made a 60 mile trip north in the Jeep this morning to spend the last $60 I currently had in my build fund. These were listed as 4” lift springs for a TJ, but I doubt they are. Rear springs on a TJ are wider. Who cares. They’ll work great on this build.

The HP in a short jeep is a beautiful thing. Straightens the DL angle right out.

I’m working on the drawings for this frame so I know how much material I’ll need, and in what direction this is headed.

I want to spread the rear of the frame to allow for more space for the fuel tank and exhaust, but I don’t want to send the coils too far outboard and lose flex. If the coils can rest on the plane of the frame, it would be ideal, but I don’t want them to sit under the frame and cause too much lift. If I bow the frame out around the coil mounts, it will save 4” of unneeded lift while retaining all the other benefits. Plus it will make a nice porch for a bump stop to mount to.

The jog in the frame will be a meeting point of the radius arm mount and cage A-pillar mount.

Wheelbase will be spread approximately 2” rearward and 2” forward to keep the larger tires from looking like they’re encroaching on the body.

In woodworking, it's not that much more difficult to build two of something if you build them at the same time. You've got all the jigs set up, the tablesaw set up, etc. In other words, can you build two of these? :D

The frame drawings got a little more complex.

I bailed on the rear coil buckets being built into the frame. That much work wasn’t worth gaining 2” of spring location. Plus, if this ends up too tall with the springs in their new location, they’ll be just outside the wheel well wall, so raising them is possible.

I crawled down the rabbit hole of 4-link suspension geometries and came up with this. The jog in the frame moved back a little to allow for longer lower arms to pass, and for the upper arms to mount to. Anti squat, roll center percentages, etc…, are all as good as I can get on this platform. I’m sure things will change a little in real life, but it looks good to me on paper.
