I have a 1956 cj with a 198 Buick engine. The PO had installed an ancient aftermarket remote oil filter with very narrow hoses and a roll of toilet paper as the filter. that looked suspect, so I removed it. I quickly discovered what I thought was his reasoning for the remote filter - the passenger side exhaust was in the way. So I rerouted the exhaust slightly and bought the shortest possible filter (fram ph25) and I thought all was well.

But while recently teaching my son to drive, he turned into a driveway really fast, fully compressed the front suspension, and the front axle pumpkin contacted the oil filter putting a small dent in the edge of the filter. Trying to figure out the best way to stop that from happening in the future.

One option would be taller bump stops, but I already have extended bump stops so i would like to avoid that route if possible.

Another option would be a more modern remote oil filter system. But they all seem to get bad reviews online and I’d rather have a direct mount if possible.

I noticed that the piece that connects the oil filter to the oil pump, whatever that piece is called, seems needlessly long on my 198. Are any other engines compatible with the 198 for this part (225, etc) and are there shorter options available? I tried searching rock auto and couldn’t find anything.

i would be open to other ideas as well. Thanks.

The 198 uses the same timing cover as the 225 and 215 V8, so it uses the same oil pump too. There are at least 3 different bottom pump housing for the oil pump, placing the spin-on filter in different directions and angles. Some put the filter to the side, to the front, or angled down and front. I initially used the version native to the '63 Buick Special when I swapped in my 215. I also had the axle hit the filter and smashed it.
I ended up using the Dauntless 225 bottom pump housing. Though it was still less than ideal, I never made contact with the axle again.

I know there are other oil filters that are much smaller in diameter that would work on V6's.
No, I don't have those numbers in front of me, may not even have them anymore.
Just a possible thought for you.

I found some images online of 225 engines, and it looks like the filters sit higher than mine, but protrude at an angle which will either hit my exhaust or my lower radiator hose.

I just found a filter that is 0.6” shorter than my existing fram ph25 filter, and just a hair narrower. K&n model 1011. That should buy me at least 0.6”, if not slightly more. If I could find something a bit narrower, that would give me even more clearance. I’ll keep looking.

For some reason the oil filter for a CJ 80-82 Pontiac Iron Puke(Duke) 151 seems stuck in my mind.
Just watch out for metric threads on the filters.

Looks like the 151 engine uses an m18 thread. I did find that many chevy trucks (2001 Silverado 2500, for example) use the correct 13/16 threading and take a smaller body filter but with the same gasket size. So I ordered a Bosch 3332 which is 3.36” tall and 2.99” wide. That gives me even more clearance than the k&n 1011 I found earlier.

I'm guessing the Bosch 3332 will buy me a solid 1” of clearance vs the fram ph25 I currently have installed, and the dent in the fram is only about 1/2” deep.

I can take a picture of mine tomorrow if that will help? But to warn you my frame is not a CJ5 as it’s a 3a/3b style. Not sure how that would change engine location.

I would be interested to see what angle your oil filter points. Mine points diagonally toward the front passenger corner of the Jeep, and slopes down at about a 45 degree angle.

As a follow up, the K&N 1011 will not work. The gasket is too wide.

fram 3506 should work perfectly. It’s smaller than the PH25 in all dimensions, but the gasket size is identical.

Here are a few I could grab before dark. Plus one of the filter number I use.
