I’m planning on an early cj5 frame, Mercedes OM617, t18, and I have an offset Dana 44 with 5.38’s.

what is the best choice for transfer case? Needs to be short enough for the early dj and work with the offset.

    thanks in advance.

You only have one choice with the narrow Jeep frame, manual transmission, and offset output, AFAIK. The Dana 18. The Novak Guide to the Dana Spicer Model 18 Transfer Case

Get the latest big hole, big intermediate shaft case. "Latest" is still old, last used in 1971.

Later - maybe there is a Roxor transfer case that will work. The offset output is anachronistic, so the Roxor cases may not be offset. Dunno.

The D18 is the only choice if you want to keep the driver's side drop and off set rear axle. Novak does a good job on the description. I don't think there would be any problem running either the 1.125 or 1.250 intermediate shaft versions behind a 617 but if one is starting from scratch, I would most definitely put together a large index version, whether the 225 V6 version of built from a D20 case makes no difference. With the old caveat that you can break anything if you try hard enough, the 18 is a relatively stout unit. They will take more than 400 ft-lbs in a relatively light Jeep.
