The way I read the FSM you should have about 3/4" before you encounter resistance. My understanding is you need this free play to make sure the release bearing is completely disengaged

non-scientific clutch adjustment with the cable clutch system
    disconnect adjustment end off fork
with your hand move fork till it stops on fingers
adjust cable end to match . now it wont slip onto fork
undo cable at clutch pedal . attach adjuster to fork
    attach cable clevis to pedal
one thing I have learned over the years . the cable loop needs to be secured under tub

Just out if curiosity what kind of oil is in the trans? Just asking because I tossed some oil I had left over at work and it happened to be synthetic. Since then I get gear clash. Never had a problem before that. Been meaning to drain and refill but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Might be someone else but I'm sure I could get one out in an hour if I tried.

With a hoist you might be able to do in and out in 1.
