    well a little update...

I ended up swapping out my ignition coil for a Petronix flame thrower unit. Was a aftermarket unit.
checking voltage at the coil I noticed I had a bit of a drop (I should run 12v)

Started digging into the wiring and after several years of trying different things the spade terminal on the ignition switch was burned, there was an OK crimp job when I bypassed the resistor. I ended up patching everything up, running as much constant wire as possible, ended up with 11 Volts at the pos side of the coil with engine off.

threw a new Orange box in there and so far so good.. idle lopes a bit, but isn't bad.

checked torque on intake and exhaust, going to double check vacuum later today.

still sitting on the petronix distributor and bronze gear.. have to machine that a bit to fit the shaft

also purchased a FBO Performance Ignition for all Makes, Muscle Cars, Street Rods, Race Engines. Specializing in Mopar Ignition Products, Distributors to Computer control ECU's.  Home of the HRR688 ignition box.. have heard some good things - will give this one a go first.

    wanted to update this...

I have come to some bold conclusions.. aftermarket ignition products just plain suck.
I don't know what it is, I will continue spelunking with my vendor contacts but I feel its all for nothing..

the NEW MOPAR vs NOS MOPAR orange box are absolutely different in construction..
the NEW Duraspark aftermarket vs NOS MOPAR or FORD units are different..

I ended up having success with the FBO box linked in the post above..
truck is running great, great power and getting better MPG

time will tell, but very happy as of today at 4:31 pm est... :D

some trip updates and some more modifications....

    https://ibb.co/StjJqWt][IMG][/url]

AOAA is a great property.. the website doesn't do it justice.. it looks like a bunch if yahoos on dirt bikes, but its in fact a really nice 4x4 trail system. Lots of "blue" trails with rocks where a stock Jeep with a good driver can have a lot of fun.

Spent the day wheeling with old acquaintance and his CJ8.. 2 long wheel base Jeeps on the woods.. what could go wrong..

quick answer.. the stock CJ6 gas tank skid.

my sending unit and in tank pump was directly under where the rock hit...
spare inline pump got me through the rest of the trip, but now its time to upgrade and replace..

I ordered a MAX built gas tank skid for CJ 15 gallon tanks.
they claim it fits 72-75 CJ's, I'm claiming a little something different, but going to figure out how to make it work.. its a well build unit and a good solid piece to start with..

Jeep CJ/YJ 15 Gallon Gas Tank Skid Plate

Slapped a new tank and sending unit in so I could drive the Jeep the balance of the good weather months.. went to fill up yesterday and the sending unit o ring decided to leak.. so were going to start all over with this. I may ditch the 72-75 tank mounting brackets and use the skid as a cradle with a strap..

    stay tuned...

It appears that the OE skid wasn't worth a damn, either. You came down hard on those rocks, but it missed takin' out your rear differential.
Are you better of fabricating your own , like you did with the shovel skid ?

the stock skid on CJ's are basically a windbreaker in a rainstorm
they look good until you really use it.. for trail rides im sure they are fine, but playing around in the rocks its bound to happen.

the ARB covers are stout.. a .50 cal would be the only thing I would worry about taking that out of commission..

I have to coat the belly skid this winter, so I don't mind cutting, blasting, and coating the pre made one..
the time savings alone is worth the $250 to me..

the real difference is the front cross member..
72-75 frames are not flush rail to rail, 76-86 frames are.
that's why the 72-75 frames use the drop down brackets, to allow the forward tank mount and compensate for the not flush mounting surface..

I think ditching the tank mounting brackets and using a strap to attack tank to the skid will make for a cleaner package..

pics to come once I'm actually under there

Still haven’t tackled the tank skid situation, but I did finally upgrade the stock steering rods. I’ve bent 2 drag links and I wasn’t going for a third.

Not a whole lot of off the shelf options, picked up the Rugged Ridge HD bars.. 1.25 DOM with stock ends..

I always had some interference with the stock rods and my leaf spring shackle… have a little bit more now..

    Any words of wisdom??

Tie rod flip? It seems like it would flatten out your drag link too.

I flipped my YJ years ago when I went to 1 Ton TREs…
It was fairly strait forward because I have to drill and ream new holes..

what’s the details on doing it with stock size ends? Deff no opposed to this.. the pitman arm might be a pita to get off, but the knuckles would be easy peezy.

So its just the knuckles that need to be done?
I can have an upward TRE at the pitman and a downward TRE at the knuckle?
