forgive me all, if you have tried to reply as my hard drive puked and I cant seem to get things right. so I am using a temp account using my wifes name. as you all know, they are NOT interested in these old things, but they ARE interested in keeping us out of their hair so they can play on faceybook or whatever.
    so here goes

    1) I have a farm cj3a with a REP8000 on it currently. its fine but when it rains and we go trotting across the bigger fields, and bog, I am out of cable quickly and man that winch is slow. so I picked up a belleview for nothing and we all know they are fasssst. but that belleview has no brake cover. but since that jeep lives on land flatter than a table, and the winch will only be for self extraction do I really need the brake??? I have a tractor for all other nonsense.
    2) that belleview has the thickest cable known to man on it. can I put 5/16" synthetic on it and get something like 150' on it? that would make it truly useable. no rocks, no mud, just pull me out of a mire- quicker and further than the ramsey
    3) back the cover. the winch has a cable operated brake on the gearing side, and thats all complete. isnt the brake that I see on the armature there to prevent armature overrun when pulling the cable out? I cant really see any other need for it. its not supposed to drag unless the weigths are slung out. so its not really a brake but a rpm governer, IMO. but Ive been wrong today. a few times.

question 2. I have mine loaded with 150' of 5/16" cable and may go to synthetic, but for now it is more than enough of what I plan to use it for.
question 3. The brake and the directional brake in the rear motor clutch bearing only allows it to turn in the proper power in and at the proper speed, the drum brake band only stops the winch from unspooling too quickly while winching. I would keep your eyes open for the motor brake goodies to install on your winch. One member here has replaced his motor with a in/out motor and has it working as such. Hope this all makes sence

I'm pretty sure the early Belleview 6000's had no brake on the motor as those are flat on that end. They were added, like you suggested, to prevent over speeding when spooling out with a load on the cable. That is a situation one is not likely to encounter in the flat lands.

I think 150' of 5/16" cable is what came on those new. If you go synthetic, make sure to clean up all the burs on the drum and replace the fairlead rollers with the polyurethane versions.

I was thinking same about that overrun brake. think I can make a end cap cover (and not use the brake) and keep on trucking? when I saw that, I thought this. someone is using it on an incline, as we do... then somehow the truck brake didnt hold, the winch brake didnt hold and the armature spun so fast that the windings came loose off the armature. I think that the parasitic drag of gearing under no external force would keep the motor at a controllable speed; and thats why its a one way mechanism
when I got this unit, it had 3/8 wire on it and hella stiff. no way it was functional at all with that cable on it. Ive never seen the poly inserts for a roller fairlead, only the solid aluminum ones. the solid units look to put a crazy amount of friction on the syn rope. but why swap the metal for poly anyway? burrs? heat? I know that in conventional inline winches the brake heat on the drum can be a factor. but the shear heat from pulling across a fixed fairlead seems to build more heat than that unless its dissipated quicker.

I have an 8274 on my CJ7 and it has the ratcheting external brake so all of this old stuff you can see the design progression. I think that Im going to put a simple continuous duty solenoid on it, and in cab 'in' btutton and roll. external brake maybe, but not in-cab operated. when Im going to use it, the jeep will be mired up. no way its rolling anywhere on its own. I would 100% not do this in any other application, but this vehicle in particular will never leave the 150 acre property I know about the bi-directional (dare I say california version) motor upgrade but again see no need 'in this application'.

Post a pic of your data plate on the Belleview
also the overspeed brake is avail on ebay, just like the original then make a cap to fit it, or have a machinist do that for ya. My winch has 150' of 5/16 steel cable. I just dont want to spend $$ on synthetic rope thats 150ft.

You have made it abundantly clear you don't feel the need for a brake on your winch. With that said, if in the future you do consider a winch brake, a modification developed by duffer many years ago for his Belleview winch can be performed. I performed the modification to my winch about a year and half ago and documented the project in this thread:

wow, a reply I would expect on Pirate.
Im not talking brake as much as armature overrun brake as it seems to be called

What the heck is that suppose to mean? I was in no way rude. I just noted you said you didn't feel the for a brake but with anything, you may change your mind.

This is a poor response to a helpful solution.

Looks like I, by just dumb luck, chose the right group to join. So far nothing but great advice and respectful people.
