So the starter on my '69 CJ project just jumped to the head of the line. Pulled it to fine a broken tooth on the starter. After talking to some local jeep guys and a starter shop it seems that there are a few different starters that are similar to the one for the 225 but are not exactly right for my application. This I am being told is because this starter was used in so many different applications. I did search but I cant seem to find much info about starters specifically for the dauntless that helps? I did check the flywheel and it is a 160 tooth and the starter I removed was a 9 tooth. Any info would be appreciated.

My 71 original starter is a Delco Remy mod. 1108338-9-E-5 if that helps.

The starter shop can't help you? Seems pretty weak for such a business. Possible they don't want your business.

Maybe someone with the parts book will tell you the Jeep PN for a '68 225 CJ-5. If you have a friendly parts store near by, ask them to order in whatever their books call for. Set the new and old side by side on the parts counter and see what you get. RockAuto offers several options 1968 JEEP CJ5 3.7L 225cid V6 Starter Motor | RockAuto - the listings may not be authoritative, but they do indicate there is no shortage of these starters.

Or you could replace the drive gear. They are available from specialty places, and your friendly parts store may have a source. Or search online.

It's the same starter as a Chevy six of that age, part number and all.

Thanks for the info guys. I was surprised too to hear that this starter "in their opinion" was so rare. I will cross reference that number for the '71. And thanks for the tip Bearskin, I will definitely check out Haps real soon.
    Cheers-

A 225 will run almost anything that will bolt in. A later 231 is picky as to which one works best.

I have Haps (a great old school shop, thanks Bearskin) bringing me in a Remy 25236 on Monday. That cross references to that 1107391. She has other issues if this doesn't work.
Thanks again for all the info.

I know Jeep solutions. It was actually the owner who said that he remembered having issues with starters on his 225's. I'm hoping its a non issue.

Just to finish off the thread, I bolted on the Remy 25236 yesterday and it spins up perfect. No shimming was necessary for the 1/8" clearance and away we go. Now on to bigger issues. Thanks again for the input all.
