That totally sucks. It may be field fixable. Frankly i think you could get a crane and swap the engine in less time. Theres got to be a running dauntless around

Don't forget to remove the ring ridge if you're thinking of reusing the rings.

If you pull the keep in your trailer I do not think you will be able to work on it because it will be real tight. So when you tear it down make sure you can get it in your trailer.

I would pull the head and see what is going on. Fix the valve. If the piston does not have a hole in the top. Get some sandpaper sand/smooth any scratches in the cylinder wall. Put it back together and run it till you get home

I have a strong dauntless I could let go if you had a way to get it there from Missouri. Maybe someone going down I-70 could help. I'm only 30 miles off the interstate.

I think this is 100% field fixable, but we need to know if there is a hole in the piston.

Scott, Sorry to read this. I can only offer moral support from here.
If you are working on this in a camp ground or parking lot, roll the Jeep onto a blue tarp before you start pulling parts. Any small parts dropped will be easier to find. IME small parts always get dropped.

There are folks coming that way but I think I’d be out of time to swap it by the time they roll thru. Sending you a message.

I’m 95% sure the piston is broken. I’ve actually been driving it a little today. Smoking and low power but it’s really not awful.

    Don't do that. :gaah:

As far as we know it can be rebuilt, if the rod goes through the block it can't be rebuilt.

I'd be extremely worried about ruining that cylinder wall.

that is only if someone is trying to save the block....maybe if the end goal is a 4.3v6 or something, it might help expediate the process....?

Yesterday morning I was in Moab. i wheeled the whole Poison Spyder trail. It wasn't until I got to Colorado that I looked at the engine. It was darn hot in Moab I could hardly wait to get out of there.

My truck is in the local shop (diesel exhaust filter) and that is how I got back down to camp. Towed it up drove back down the hill.
